New Studies Show Children Move and Respond Naturally in DOT™ Myopia Control Spectacle Lenses

New research presented at the American Academy of Optometry 2026 Annual Meeting shows that children wearing DOT™ spectacle lenses for myopia control behave and perceive their eyewear similarly to children wearing standard single‑vision lenses — while gaining the added benefit of myopia control. The findings demonstrate comparable viewing behavior and performance across daily activities such as reading, gaming, walking and cycling, along with high quality of vision and strong satisfaction among children wearing DOT lenses.

SightGlass Vision states that these outcomes should give eye care professionals greater confidence to fit DOT lenses for children with progressing myopia as readily as any standard single‑vision lens.

Consistent visual behavior across multiple tasks

Researchers examined how children use DOT lenses during familiar and dynamic visual tasks. Assessment of Viewing Behavior with Contrast Modulation Myopia Control Spectacle Lenses (Long T, et al.) used eye‑tracking to compare DOT lenses with single‑vision lenses during reading, gaming, viewing a lecture and walking. Eye and head movement patterns remained highly consistent between lens types, with no evidence of compensatory gaze or head position changes. Treatment‑zone coverage remained very high across activities for both younger and older children.

Immersive Motion Capture Evaluation (Gantes J, et al.) assessed more dynamic tasks, including locating peripheral targets, catching virtual baseballs and navigating a bicycle around obstacles. Researchers found no significant differences between DOT and single‑vision lenses in head movements, reaction times, catching performance, speed changes or steering.

Quality of vision and satisfaction comparable to standard lenses

Additional analyses from the CATHAY clinical study provide further insight into visual quality among children aged 6 to 13 who wore DOT lenses or standard single‑vision lenses for two years. Quality of Vision in Children Wearing Diffusion Optics Technology™ (Wang D, et al.) found that visual disturbances — glare, halos and hazy vision — were infrequent with both lens types and, when present, were predominantly mild. DOT lenses showed a disturbance profile comparable to or more favorable than single‑vision lenses.

Subjective Experience in Children Wearing Diffusion Optics Technology™ (Carta F, et al.) evaluated distance, near and night vision, visual acceptance, satisfaction and overall impression. More than 91% of responses across all measures were positive or neutral, with no significant differences between DOT and single‑vision wearers.

Clinical reassurance for practitioners

SightGlass Vision notes that DOT lenses allow children to maintain natural visual behavior without adjusting gaze or head position to compensate for the treatment zone. The company states that these findings provide important reassurance that children can gain the myopia‑control benefit of DOT lenses without changing how they naturally use their glasses.

DOT lenses are the first myopia management treatment designed to reduce retinal contrast signaling through light‑scattering elements. They have been validated in clinical trials in North America and China and have been worn by more than two million children. DOT lenses maintain a single optical power across the lens rather than using multiple powers to create peripheral defocus.

DOT lenses are commercially available in China, Canada, Israel, Spain and the UK. SightGlass Vision operates as a joint venture of CooperVision, Inc. and Essilor International.
