Don’t Overlook Your Child’s Vision This Back‑to‑School Season

As families across Canada prepare for the new school year, the Canadian Ophthalmological Society (COS) is reminding parents that school supplies aren’t the only thing worth checking off the list. Good vision plays a critical role in learning, yet many childhood eye conditions can go unnoticed because children often don’t realize they’re having trouble seeing. Left undetected, these issues can affect reading, classroom performance and healthy visual development.

“Parents spend a lot of time getting their children ready for school, but eye health is often overlooked,” said Dr. Christine Law, Pediatric Ophthalmologist. “A child may not complain about their vision because they don’t know anything is wrong. That’s why it’s important to pay attention to the signs and seek assessment when something doesn’t seem right.”

Signs That May Indicate a Vision Problem

As children head back to the classroom, parents should watch for behaviors that could signal a visual issue, including:

  • Squinting or tilting their head to see
  • Excessive blinking or eye rubbing
  • Holding books or screens very close
  • Frequent headaches or tired eyes
  • Difficulty reading or losing their place on the page

“Many childhood eye conditions respond best to treatment when they’re identified early,” added Dr. Law. “Recognizing the signs and addressing concerns promptly can help support a child’s visual development and success in the classroom.”

Healthy Habits to Protect Children’s Vision

August is Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month, a reminder that protecting vision goes beyond recognizing symptoms. Whether children are returning to school, playing sports or spending time outdoors, healthy habits—such as wearing UV400 sunglasses outside—can help safeguard their eyes.

Parents who have concerns about their child’s vision should arrange an eye assessment with an optometrist. If a medical or surgical eye condition is suspected, an ophthalmologist can provide specialized diagnosis and treatment. Ophthalmologists are medical doctors and surgeons who diagnose and manage a wide range of pediatric eye conditions, including those requiring medical or surgical care.
