Canadian Optometry Students Team Up in Ireland to Share Journey

Podcast

Canadians Danny and Gagan, 3rd year Optometry students at Technological University Dublin (Ireland) share their perspectives on the subtle and not-so-subtle differences in scope of practice and perceived professional role of Optometry in Ireland and the UK compared to North America in their new podcast “The Primary Eye Guys”.

Episode 5 – Optometry Around the World (US/Canada/Ireland/UK)

The pair of Canucks, from Victoria, BC, and Toronto respectively, started their podcast in December 2018 with a view to share their story of pursuing optometric study outside of North America.

A lack of good information on optometry foreign study options outside of North America was a motivating factor to launch Primary Eye Guys podcast.

The “light and entertaining” series documents their journey to the Irish Optometry school from Canadian jobs in health care that included pharmacy and optometric assistant roles.

They hope to bring in guests to share learning form others on how optometric career paths evolve. Danny and Gagan’s aim is to repatriate down the road but they know that there will be some hoops  to jump through to achieve their goals.

SILMO Istanbul 2018, a Trade Fair that Counts

For its 6th edition, which was held from December 13 to 16, 2018, SILMO ISTANBUL demonstrated how it has quickly become an essential event on the horizon of trade fairs specializing in the optical and eyewear industry.

Pursuing continual growth since it was founded, SILMO ISTANBUL welcomed 150 companies and 647 brands throughout the 3 levels of the 17,000 m2 of Istanbul Expo CenterYeşilköy, and was attended by 10,784 visitors for an increase of 16% compared to 2017. There was a tremendous increase in international visitors: + 27.5%, or 1,627 professionals in attendance.

This upswing reflects the ambition of this trade fair to win over the heart of the Eurasian zone – encompassing the great economic power of the Balkans, the Middle East, Central Asia and North Africa –, which is emerging as the ideal meeting point for the optical and eyewear industry. In particular, the MENA(Middle East and North Africa) zone addresses a market of nearly 350 million consumers with growing purchasing power. Thanks to the international exposure of SILMO ISTANBUL, optical and eyewear professionals had the opportunity to encounter Turkish and foreign producers and to boost their business in Istanbul, the economic capital of Turkey.

The 2019 edition of SILMO ISTANBUL will be held from November 21 to 24.
