Centennial Optical launches SPINE Eyewear

Centennial Optical introduces SPINE Eyewear, a revolution in performance, which will be available on the Canadian market in January 2015.

Inspired by the interaction between vertebrae, SPINE solves hinge limitations. Constructed with micro injected metal (MiM) hinges, SPINE Eyewear will morph to fit any face shape or head size with the lightest touch. Due to its dual springs and spun wire cable, SPINE temples also automatically retract when removed from the face – heightening its preservation capabilities. Designed for everyday wear, SPINE is a collection that features classic, minimal shapes.

Partnership between Carl Zeiss and FYidoctors

Carl Zeiss Vision Canada and FYidoctors announce a partnership to produce ZEISS lenses.

Carl Zeiss Vision Canada authorized FYidoctors as the first non‐ZEISS lab to produce ZEISS lenses in Canada because of their commitment to outstanding customer service and their growing network of optometrists. The Eyence Lab will supply the FYidoctors network which includes over 280 locations and over 450 optometrists between its corporately owned and Vision Source Canada offices.

In addition to the ZEISS branded products, ZEISS has developed private label lens designs for the FYidoctors network and Vision Source Canada offices.

New postoperative implant is effective

The first ever tear duct implant developed to treat inflammation and pain following cataract surgery could be a good alternative to eye drops.

The device automatically delivers the correct level of postoperative medication in patients. After 30 days, it liquefies and is evacuated through the tear ducts, without the need for outside intervention.

Tested in four American ophthalmology practices, the device delivered dexamethasone into the eyes of 30 patients over 30 days, while 30 other patients received a placebo. On day one, the placebo group reported pain three times higher than the medicated group. After 14 days, the pain was 11 times higher than it was for the others.

Google Glass device may reduce peripheral vision

A test conducted by researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, shows that the Google Glass device creates a blind spot in the wearer’s peripheral vision.

The researchers tested three wearers. They compared their findings to tests using the Google Glass, then with ordinary glasses of similar colour and similar temples.

The results of all three participants show that the device creates a blind spot, causing a significant visual obstruction in the upper right quadrant.

Also, analysis of the photos of 132 wearers shows that people tend to place the Google Glass device near or above their pupillary axis, which can cause blind spots and interfere with vision.

No 3D for children under age six

A French agency recommends zero exposure to 3D movies and video games for children under six years of age, and limiting usage of these devices for kids under 13.

The Agence nationale de sécurité sanitaire de l’alimentation, de l’environnement et du travail (a French governmental agency dealing with sanitary safety in food, the environment and at work) advises that 3D technology does not allow the eyes to converge and accommodate at the same distance when perceiving depth and relief. Visualizing 3D images accelerates the onset of eye fatigue, in addition to causing symptoms ranging from peri-ocular pain, dry eyes or visual disorders, to headaches or poor concentration.

More severe symptoms related to the vergence-accommodation conflict of the eyes could develop in children under six, due to the immaturity of their visual system.
