Abbott reports good results in eye care market

Abbott reported a sales increase of 5.8% over last year for the third quarter of 2014.

Abbott’s total worldwide sales were CA$5.7 billion in the third quarter of 2014. Although sales in the Medical Devices sector dropped 1% compared with the same period last year, sales in the Optics sector rose by 5.2%. The company reported total revenues of CA$336 million, CA$124 million of which was in the United States (a 14% increase over the same period last year).

Increased sales and profits at Hoya

Hoya posted an 18.6% increase in its profits for the second quarter of 2014, compared with the same period in 2013.

The Japanese company reported CA$1.2 million in sales (121,242 million yen) in this quarter. Its after-tax profit was almost CA$275,000 (27,323 million yen).

In the Life Care segment, which includes ophthalmic, contact and intraocular lenses, sales increased by 20.5%, compared with the same period last year, to CA$759,000 (75,493 million yen). This growth was driven by a significant increase in sales in overseas markets and through the inclusion of Seiko Optical Products.

New Look Eyewear Inc. announces its results for the third quarter of 2014

New Look has reported revenues of $32.5 million for the third quarter that ended September 27, 2014.

This represents an increase of 54% compared with the same period last year. These results are mainly attributable to the addition of 65 Vogue Optical stores in December 2013.

Sales from stores opened by New Look and Vogue Optical before 2013 increased by 3.7% over last year.  The net earnings attributed to shareholders of $1.65 million for the quarter increased by 48.5% over last year, including a provision of $0.81 million for expenses related to the acquisition of companies as well as to the acquisition of Greiche & Scaff, announced last August.

Marchand Giguère merges with FYidoctors

As part of its expansion plans, the Calgary-based optometry network, FYidoctors, has made its entry into Quebec by merging with the Marchand Giguère Group.

Marchand Giguère and its affiliates have 70 optometry locations under various banners, including 16 independent clinics which are also joining the group through the merger. FYidoctors has over 450 optometrists in over 280 locations under the FYidoctors banner or Vision Source Canada.

The Marchand Giguère Group believes that with the Quebec market in the midst of so much consolidation and change, this new business model was the best option for optometrists who want to remain in control of their destiny.

Fear of vision loss

People fear blindness as much as they do cancer, Alzheimer’s disease and HIV/AIDS, according to a poll by Research!America and Alliance for Eye and Vision Research.

The majority of respondents considered vision loss to be the worst that could happen to them, as opposed to the loss of memory, hearing or speech. About 80% of respondents said that research to improve the prevention and treatment of eye disorders was a priority.

The poll, conducted in August 2014, involved 925 Whites, 401 Hispanics, 301 Asian-Americans and 417 African-Americans.
