Hosted by Christine Zeggil and Isabelle Tremblay, Episode 11 looks beyond business strategy to explore the human side of practice ownership—what it takes to lead, let go, and move forward after decades of building a career.

Eye on the Industry Podcast with Dr. Diana Monea

Succession Planning as a Strategic Priority

After more than 40 years in clinical practice and successfully executing a structured succession plan in 2025, Dr. Monea emphasizes that planning an exit should not be an afterthought.

She encourages practitioners to begin with the end in mind—building a practice that can eventually transition smoothly to new leadership. Without early planning, she notes, many owners are forced into reactive decisions driven by personal or economic circumstances.

Her advice: break the process into manageable steps, seek guidance from financial and legal advisors, and maintain clarity throughout the journey.

Leadership Shaped by Adversity

A defining part of the discussion centers on how personal loss and professional challenges reshape leadership. For Dr. Monea, adversity strengthened her sense of empathy and reinforced the importance of leading with humanity.

She describes leadership not only as decision-making, but as creating space for others—understanding their struggles and supporting them through difficult moments.

In her view, optometry offers a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact:
to connect with patients, understand their experiences, and improve their quality of life in tangible ways.

Lifelong Learning and Evolving Leadership

Even after decades in practice, Dr. Monea returned to university to complete a Master of Human Resource Management—an experience that reinforced the importance of understanding people across generations.

She highlights that successful practices depend on having the right people in the right roles, and that strong leadership today requires collaboration between generations, each bringing different strengths and perspectives.

Rebuilding and Moving Forward

The episode also addresses the realities of navigating major life changes—balancing personal loss, business transitions, and new responsibilities.

Dr. Monea speaks candidly about the challenges of rebuilding, emphasizing the importance of taking small, manageable steps and leaning on support networks—sometimes from unexpected sources.

Her message is one of resilience: progress does not come all at once, but through consistent effort, patience, and the willingness to keep moving forward.

A Conversation that Resonates

Episode 11 stands out as one of the more personal conversations in the Eye on the Industry series—offering practical guidance for practice owners while also addressing the emotional realities of leadership and change.
