Dr. James Wolffsohn Joins Waterloo as Eye Health Research Chair

Dr. James Wolffsohn

Dr. James Wolffsohn joined the University of Waterloo’s School of Optometry and Vision Science on Oct. 1 as the Government of Canada Eddie Goldenberg Research Chair in Health Innovation.

Dr. Wolffsohn is relocating from the United Kingdom. His planned research program will span discovery, clinical research and commercialization, with Waterloo students involved at different stages, according to the university’s announcement.

The Government of Canada Eddie Goldenberg Research Chairs of Canada initiative honours the late Eddie Goldenberg, a distinguished public servant and former chief of staff to Prime Minister Jean Chrétien, whose decades of leadership helped shape Canada’s modern research and innovation landscape. The research chairs initiative was launched in December 2025 as part of a $1.7 billion investment announced in Budget 2025.

Dr. Wolffsohn’s research interests include low-cost, portable diagnostic tools; artificial intelligence (AI) for eye-disease detection; and new approaches to prevention and treatment. He also plans to explore community-based monitoring of conditions such as macular degeneration and the use of mobile screening and digital platforms in routine care.

Research focuses on access and earlier detection

Dr. Wolffsohn identifies unequal access to eye care, rising childhood myopia, dry eye disease, age-related retinal conditions and gaps in services for rural and remote communities as challenges his work will address.

His research will examine how AI-supported image analysis could aid disease identification and how affordable diagnostic tools could support earlier detection. He also plans to study disease mechanisms that may inform future treatments and contact and intraocular lens technologies.

The potential impact will depend on how these approaches develop and are evaluated. Dr. Wolffsohn says he hopes the work will contribute to earlier detection, more personalized care and reduced preventable vision loss.

Waterloo aims to connect research with commercialization

Dr. Wolffsohn said Waterloo’s research and commercialization resources influenced his decision to join the university. The Waterloo Eye Institute, commercialization office and research partnership team are among the resources identified as potential supports for clinical validation, industry engagement and prototyping.

The program is intended to connect research with possible real-world applications, including diagnostic tools and digital health platforms. The university says students from areas such as health sciences, engineering and business will have opportunities to take part.

The announcement does not specify timelines for particular technologies or clinical programs.
