Essilor Announces AI Powered Progressive Lens

EssilorLuxottica’s scientists have harnessed the power of artificial intelligence (AI) and combined it with their understanding of consumer lifestyles to create the best overall progressive lens: Varilux® XR series™.

The best overall claim results from Essilor R&D simulations done in 2022, which were based on measurements weighted by the level of importance of each criterion for progressive lenses identified by users in a multinational quantitative study by IPSOS.  The simulations were done on the most relevant competitive brands with good level of awareness among consumers.

The EssilorLuxottica Group has gathered over one million data points to develop a behavioral modeling system that predicts how presbyope individuals will look at objects around them.

“The power of artificial intelligence lies in the quantity, quality and variety of data and the way they’re analyzed. The insights we established from data collected from customer orders, real life wearer tests, in store measurements and physiological models are exclusive to EssilorLuxottica. Thanks to the digital twinning technology, we can now establish a visual behavior profile for every single prescription and provide the first eye-responsive lens that respects the natural behavior of the eye,” commented Norbert Gorny, Co-chief Operating Officer at EssilorLuxottica.

Varilux® XR series™ wearers benefit from instant sharpness, even in motion, with up 49% more vision volume based on internal R&D simulations compared to Varilux® X series™. In independent third-party tests, 87% of consumers, mostly wearing premium progressive lens, preferred Varilux® XR series™ to their previous lenses, after trying them, with no change in their prescription (based upon 73 PAL wearer study conducted in France). And 95% of wearers adapted to their new lenses on the first day.

In keeping with customers’ expectations and EssilorLuxottica’s commitment to reduce its footprint on the planet, Varilux® XR series™ is an eco-design progressive lens. This is certified by a life-cycle analysis run by an independent third party that brought to light a 19% reduction of plastic consumption resulting in -6% CO2 emissions.

The new progressive lenses will be available in the coming months to EssilorLuxottica ECP partners in Europe and other international markets. Availability dates will be communicated for markets when the roll out plan is finalized.

ECO Eyewear Plants 3.3 Million Trees Through One Frame, One Tree Program

For each frame purchased, a tree is planted through ECO Eyewear’s “One Frame, One Tree” program. Together with customers, retailers, and the NGO Trees for the Future, the program has now planted 3.3 million trees. This engagement has resulted in more than 154,629 metric tons of CO2 sequestered.

The program works with Trees for the Future, an NGO that educates smallholder farmers to use agro-forestry and permaculture. Their method is called the Forest Garden Approach. So far, they have planted more than 19,095 forest gardens.

Planting trees provides families with more than just food. It provides income, empowerment, unity, leadership, education, and even saves lives.

“We are proud to have a partner like Eco and we are thankful for their dedicated support, enabling us to achieve our goals.” John Leary, Executive Director, Trees for the Future

WCO Alcon logos

The World Council of Optometry (WCO) and Alcon have opened registration for “Dry Eye Spotlight 3: Management,” the third in a series of complimentary global dry eye disease education initiative webinars. The March 14 webinar, led by Professor Lyndon Jones and featuring Professors Jennifer Craig and James Wolffsohn, explores the importance of being choiceful and methodical in different approaches available to manage dry eye.

In the webinar, the faculty discusses how management strategies may be adjusted based on a further understanding of mitigating factors and measurements collected from patients.

A question-and-answer session will follow the presentation to give participants exclusive access to distinguished expert faculty members. Register HERE.

Professor Jones said, “One surprising fact is that 20 to 25% of patients that optometrists see suffer from dry eye. My top tip for any practitioner when they’re thinking about dry eye is don’t be scared by it. Many patients have dry eyes, and management is not that complicated. The use of education is one of the simplest and most impactful interventions. This webinar is an excellent place to start or further your dry eye management journey.”

The “Dry Eye Spotlight 3: Management” webinar will be independently presented in three time zones with live faculty-attendee interaction on Tuesday, March 14:

5 p.m. HKT/SST = Hong Kong/Singapore

6 p.m. CET = Central Europe

6 p.m. PST = Pacific Standard

Participants may choose their session when registering at https://bit.ly/DryEyeManagement.

The first and second webinars in the series, “Dry Eye Spotlight 1: Mitigation” and “Dry Eye Spotlight 2: Measurement” are now available on demand at dryeye.worldcouncilofoptometry.info

The website also features tools and resources that eye care professionals can use right away based on the three main pillars of mitigation, measurement, and management.

The ”Dry Eye Spotlight 3: Management” webinar on March 14 will also be available on demand following the event. Registration for the fourth webinar in the Dry Eye Spotlight series, “Dry Eye Wheel Tool” (May 9), will open in the coming months.

Alcon Canada Launches New TOTAL Toric Lenses for Astigmatic Patients

Alcon announced the Canadian launch of TOTAL30® for Astigmatism and DAILIES TOTAL1® for Astigmatism. This launch extends Alcon’s portfolio of reusable and daily disposable lenses, with high-performing options designed for astigmatic patients.

Estimates show that toric lenses – for astigmatic correction – is the fastest growing segment of the contact lens market, presenting an opportunity for eye care professionals to provide outstanding vision correction and patient experience. Though 47% of patients require astigmatic correction, studies show only 10% of them wear toric lenses.

“We’re proud to bring TOTAL30 for Astigmatism contact lenses to Canada, alongside DAILIES TOTAL1 for Astigmatism lenses which have been tremendously successful in other markets,” said Chris Gruhn, General Manager of Alcon Canada. “These eagerly anticipated innovations will provide astigmatic patients with stable vision and outstanding overall comfort, delivering on our purpose to help people see brilliantly.”

Studies show toric lens wearers experience more discomfort compared to sphere lens wearers (42% vs. 35%) and end-of-day dryness (35% vs. 26%).Featuring Alcon’s proprietary Water Gradient material, the new TOTAL toric lenses address these concerns, with a lens that is nearly 100% water at its surface so all that touches the eye is a gentle cushion of moisture.

These innovations also feature other proprietary technologies from Alcon designed to help provide patients with the ultimate wearing experience:

  • The PRECISION BALANCE 8|4® lens design provides the on-eye stability astigmatic contact lens wearers need for exceptionally clear and stable vision.
  • The reusable, Water Gradient design of TOTAL30 for Astigmatism features biomimetic CELLIGENT™ Technology, which helps resist bacteria and lipid deposits for a clean lens all month long.
  • DAILIES TOTAL1 for Astigmatism features SmarTears® Technology, whichreleases an ingredient found naturally in tears that helps to stabilize the lipid layer of the tear film.
