Death of Philippe Lafont

Philippe Lafont, president of the SILMO Paris exhibition and Lafont Paris passed away suddenly at the age of 70.

Since 2012, Philippe Lafont has devoted himself to developing the exhibition, seeking to make SILMO a flagship forum for all industry stakeholders. Continuing the work begun by Guy Charlot, Philippe’s commitment has seen SILMO become a valuable tool for opticians and helped to raise the profile of the French optics sector. Under his leadership, SILMO has also pursued its international development.

His death is a huge loss for all who were fortunate enough to work with him. SILMO’s administrators and teams extend their deepest sympathy to his family and friends.

MIDO 2017 Reports 5.5% Growth in Attendance

MIDO President Cirillo Marcolin called it, “an invaluable moment to network and gain new insights into the profession and industry trends”, while reporting a 5.5% growth in attendance over the previous year, with 55,000 attendees from around the world in Milan Feb 25-27.

MIDO was especially boastful of their slick and successful social media campaign, with over 20,000 posts using the official MIDO Hashtags during the three-day event, including #LivetheWonder.

Highlighting the event the MIDO awards for BESTORE and BESTAND.  The BESTORE was created by MIDO to honor the optical stores with ideas that shape trends, where originality, innovation and an exciting atmosphere promote a unique shopping experience.

Award winners were from Japan, Austria and France.

The Vision Council to Educate About Blue Light, Digital Eye Strain at SXSW

Alexandria, VA –The Vision Council will be sponsoring the official health lounge at South by Southwest (SXSW) – an annual conglomerate of film, interactive media, music and health festivals and conferences in Austin, TX, kicking off this week – to educate attending consumer media and conference-goers about the harmful side effects of blue light and digital eye strain, as well as the lens technology solutions available.

Titled “The Time Out Lounge: Give Your Eyes a Break with The Vision Council,” the lounge – which will be located in the Austin Convention Center and open from March 10 through March 14 – will serve as a space where attendees can unwind from the conference’s many events and panels. The Vision Council staff will be engaging with visitors to spread the following messages:

• What blue light and digital eye strain are;
• The health implications of prolonged digital device usage on the eyes;
• How blue light and digital eye strain can be combatted with specialized lens technologies;
• That any pair of fashionable frames can be outfitted with these specialized lenses, so style doesn’t have to be sacrificed for eye health;
• That an annual eye exam is the ideal opportunity for individuals to speak with an eye doctor about their digital device usage and formulate a unique pair of frames with lenses that suit their specific eye health needs.
