HOYA Vision Care Canada Launches Their Latest Campaign, BE A HERO

Hoya Vision Care Canada logo

Mississauga, ON – HOYA Vision Care Canada’s “BE A HERO” campaign acknowledges and celebrates the everyday Hero – The Independent Eye Care professional. As the Ally of the Independent, HOYA shares their same values and is committed to helping people see their best. HOYA strives to give independent practices effective tools, in order to be successful in such a highly competitive marketplace.

The “BE A HERO” campaign highlights the iD family of lenses and substrate matched coatings like EX3 and Recharge. These differentiating products provide exceptional quality to the patient while at the same time reward the practice. Participating practices can collect 20 or 40 stickers with the purchase of iD lenses or Recharge and EX3 anti-reflection coatings and redeem them for rewards.

HOYA understands that investing in the well-being of patients means investing in the community. Many practices support charitable organizations that assist vision impaired patients. Practices and patients alike can be proud Heros knowing that when they choose one of HOYA’s eligible products from March 1st to July 31st, HOYA will make a donation to the Canadian National Institute for the Blind – CNIB.

Clématis: A Symphony of Colour

The movement of plant life has inspired the Koali designer for this new concept known as Clématis: fluidity expressed through material.

Created using a complex manufacturing process, the material is made up of three different colour textures and densities that ripple randomly through a translucent coloured base, evoking the delicate patterning at the center of the clematis flower.

Fitted with slim temples, the frames come with an exclusive micro-fused flex-hinge in the form of a “K”.

Worked in matching tones, different shades of the same colour or three different colors, Clématis frames are available in a palette of 20 exclusive colors: indigo blue, turquoise, brown/beige/turquoise, celadon green/orchid pink, orange/coral, amethyst/deep mauve, plum/cherry/almond, lichen green/lime green, wine red/brick red, etc.

New Technique Regenerates Human Lens after Cataract Surgery

Researchers at UC San Diego School of Medicine developed an approach towards removing congenital cataracts in infants that allows existing stem cells to regenerate the lens, resulting in fewer complications and superior visual function than current techniques allow.

This new technique uses endogenous stem cells, cells already in place at the injury site rather than cultured or transplanted, to regenerate lens cells. In a typical cataract operation, lens epithelial stem cells are removed. However, by keeping the lens membrane in place, the growth of new lens cells can be directed into a functioning lens.

The results of a small human trial, published in the March 9 issue of Nature, compared the outcomes of 12 infants under the age of 2 who received the new surgical technique with a control group 25 infants receiving standard surgical care for congenital cataracts. After three months all infants receiving the new technique had regenerated new, clear lenses, while the control group had higher incidences of postsurgical inflammation and other complications.

“We believe that our new approach will result in a paradigm shift in cataract surgery and may offer patients a safer and better treatment option in the future,” said Kang Zhang, chief of Ophthalmic Genetics at UC San Diego. “The success of this work represents a new approach in how new human tissue or organ can be regenerated and human disease can be treated, and may have a broad impact on regenerative therapies by harnessing the regenerative power of our own body.

Special Olympics Calls for ECP Volunteers in Guelph and Markham

Special Olympics Ontario are coming to southern Ontario in May, and the “Healthy Athletes / Opening Eyes” National Clinical Director, Dr. Melanie DeJesus, is calling for volunteers to get involved.

Optometrists, Opticians, and others will be working together to provide visual health and acuity screening, and fitting and dispensing of prescription eyewear, safety goggles, and non-prescription sunglasses to a very underserviced segment of society, those with intellectual disabilities and special needs.

Senior Optician / Dispensary manager, Thomas Weissberger has been with the program for 12 years and says it’s a truly life-enhancing opportunity, “It is hard work, with a fast pace, and even though you are there to help these special people, it’s as if they have helped you. The feeling is amazing.”

The events will be held May 1st at the Pan Am Centre in Markham, and May 27th in Guelph. If you are able to donate your time and energy, please contact Thomas Weissberger at tweissberger@essilor.ca.

Special  Olympics Opening Eyes is an event sponsored world-wide by Essilor International.
