Blue Point Invests in Europa Eyewear to Support Growth and Development of a New Platform

Europa Eyewear announces its partnership with Blue Point Capital Partners, a mid-west investment firm. Blue Point Capital has made a meaningful investment in Europa to fuel its growth and expansion.

Founded by Alan and Cynthia Shapiro in 1977 and led today by the founders’ son Scott Shapiro, Europa is one of the largest independent eyewear companies in the United States. Nearly all of the Company’s frame collections are proprietary trade and consumer brands supported by a fully employed salesforce.

“Blue Point’s industry-focused operating executives, optical experience and differentiated capabilities made partnering with them an easy choice,” said Europa CEO Scott Shapiro. “Blue Point shares our vision for the future, even more importantly, they share our values. This was imperative given Europa’s unique culture and the role this plays in shaping the next chapter of our family’s legacy.”

“Together, Europa and Blue Point are committed to strengthening the tremendous value and service we provide to our customers as well as expanding our product portfolio to address the needs of today’s consumers,” said Europa President Jerry Wolowicz.

This investment is supported by Blue Point’s decades of experience working with family-owned businesses and its deep knowledge of the optical space, underpinned by its transformative investment in Hilco Vision. In addition to Blue Point’s industry experience and value-added capabilities, Jeff Cole and Holly Rush, two highly accomplished industry leaders, will serve as advisors and board members to the Company, while providing guidance to the Europa Management team.

“Europa is an outstanding company — we are proud to support its leadership team, further strengthen its exceptional culture and provide a platform for growth by leveraging Blue Point’s value-added capabilities and future M&A,” said Blue Point Principal Evan Cottington.

Europa Eyewear Canada is a separate company and remains the exclusive Canadian distributor for Europa Eyewear brands including STATE Optical Co. and American Optical.

See Every Detail with AS Viewfit Single Vision Lenses from Nikon

Nikon Optical Canada logo

Today, Nikon Optical Canada announces the launch of AS Viewfit lenses. Nowadays, the lifestyles of patients demand a more dynamic vision and a higher level of precision across the entire lens.

Wearers are now looking through a larger part of the lens and not just through the center. They are juggling many activities at the same time; therefore, they are using the entire lens surface more often and this requires a higher precision.

Consumers can get the best fit for their wearer parameters and frame choice with AS Viewfit lenses. The Nikon Optical Design Engine and the 2-axis optimization significantly reduce oblique astigmatism offering superior clarity, comfort and fit.

AS Viewfit is the ideal upgrade from standard single vision lenses and are available in indexes: 1.50, 1.60, 1.67 and 1.74. These lenses are best paired with SeeCoat™ Next series of coatings and are available in a wide variety of materials including Clear, Pure Blue UV™, Transitions® Signature® GEN 8™, Transitions® XTRActive® New Generation and Transitions® XTRActive® Polarized™.

Cells Grown in Lab Can Reach Out and Connect to Other Retina Cells

Fighting Blindness Canada research

Fighting Blindness Canada (FBC) funded scientist Dr. David Gamm (University of Wisconsin) has successfully shown that photoreceptor cells grown from stem cells can reach out and connect with their neighboring cells. Published in the journal PNAS, this study brings us one step closer to testing a stem cell therapy in humans in a clinical trial.

The death of photoreceptor cells leads to vision loss in retinal diseases, such as inherited retinal diseases (e.g. retinitis pigmentosa or Usher syndrome) or age-related macular degeneration.

Gene therapies are one form that may prevent the death of photoreceptor cells and therefore slow down vision loss. However, if retinal degeneration and vision loss is advanced, gene therapy treatments won’t work. This is when stem cell therapy comes in; where new cells such as photoreceptors cells are grown in a lab and then transplanted back into the eye replacing cells that have died or been damaged. Stem cell therapy offers hope to restore vision that is lost. So far, we have not seen a successful therapy that replaces photoreceptor cells.
