SILMO and copenhagen specs Join Forces to Promote Independent Eyewear

Silmo Association President, Amélie Morel, Silmo director at Comexposium, Eric Lenoir, and Morten Gammelmark, founder/CEO of the copenhagen specs fair concept have announced on February 23rd, 2019, the arrival of two new fairs within the Silmo family.

Launched in 2014 in the Danish capital, copenhagen specs’ goal is to highlight independent eyewear to independent opticians looking forward to offering their customers different products and therefore distinguish themselves from mainstream and mass-produced eyewear.

The sixth edition of copenhagen specs in Denmark just ended with good results: 77 exhibitors, 1076 visitors from 18 different countries.

From October 5th to 6th, Berlin will welcome the second edition of Copenhagen Specs in the German capital.

Together with the Silmo network, copenhagen specs, while its successful concept and unique atmosphere will remain as it is actually, will benefit from an enhanced visibility among eyewear trade fairs but more importantly, will be able to develop other destinations in Europe and around the world at a quicker pace.

New Career Zone to Host Pathways to Leadership in Corporate Optometry Panel

Launching at Vision Expo East 2019, the new Career Zone will connect top optical retailers with eyecare providers and host some of the industry’s top thought leaders in this year’s Pathways to Leadership in Corporate Optometry Panel. The Career Zone will offer vast opportunities for networking through panel discussions, receptions and the new Passport Program for students and young professionals.

On Saturday, March 23, the Pathways to Leadership in Corporate Optometry Panel will be held in the Career Zone starting at 4 p.m. with a cocktail reception to follow at 4:45 p.m.–5:30 p.m. This year’s panel, sponsored by the American Association of Corporate Optometry and Walmart, will bring together top industry thought leaders and discuss the range of business models optometrists can practice today.

Moderator Erinn Morgan, editor-in-chief of Eyecare Business Magazine, will help guide the discussion as each panelist shares his or her perspectives and experiences.

Exhibitors in the Career Zone include Cohen’s Fashion Optical, Corporate Optometry Today, For Eyes, Luxottica, MyEyeDr., National Vision, Vision Source, VuePoint IDS and Walmart.

Also launching this year, the new Passport Program will provide students and young professionals the opportunity to explore and get acquainted with exhibitors. Individuals under the age of 34 will receive a passport, included with each badge, to take to vendors for a stamp to be entered to win participating vendor prizes, including an apple watch, eyewear, gift cards and more.

Safilo 2018 Reports Sales Decline and Profit Loses at Lower Rate

Safilo, the besieged Italian Eyewear giant, approved the 2018 financial results March 13.  The hemorrhaging from the prior year was substantially stopped, but the company still had a loss of 5.9 Mio Euros on year over year sales declines of 7%.

In the “plus” column, the company cites positive performance of licensed brands in the premium and contemporary segment, the launch of rag & bone and Moschino brands, and results of their own “core” brands including Polaroid.  The “minus” column includes the Céline license exit, and a weak performance in fashion luxury Sunglasses.

The company hopes that the 4th quarter results are a harbinger of the year that follows. Q4 sales and Gross Profit showed increases versus the same period last year, of 2% and 3% respectively, while EBITDA turned positive at 2.6% of quarterly net sales.

CEO Angelo Trocchia commented, “In 2019, we envisage the opportunity to recover top line growth and above all a sustainable level of profitability, reflecting the progress of our cost saving projects.”

Injected Nanoparticles Allow Mice to See in Near-IR

Researchers at the University of Science and Technology China (USTC) in Hefei figured out how to allow mice to see in infrared by injecting the rodents’ eyes with nanoparticles.

The nanoparticles would bind to the animals’ retinal photoreceptors and function as near-infrared transducers, essentially self-powered nanoantennae. Using single-photoreceptor recordings, electroretinograms, cortical recordings, and visual behavioural tests, they determined that the mice were able to perceive near-infrared light.

Not only that, but they were also able to distinguish sophisticated shape patterns in near-infrared, even when the patterns were transmitted in ambient daylight conditions. This is a problem for many existing night-vision devices, which quickly get saturated by even low levels of ambient light. However, the mice were able to follow patterns projected in near-IR to find hidden platforms even in the presence of visible light shape patterns and to use patterns in visible and near-IR simultaneously.

The particles work by converting light in the near-infrared area of the electromagnetic spectrum (with a wavelength around 980 nanometres) to a wavelength of 530 nm, which mammalian eyes can see very well, and would be perceived by humans as green. The nanoparticles were coated with a chemical that allowed them to bind to photoreceptors and administered via sub-retinal injection.

“This approach offers several advantages over the currently used optoelectronic devices, such as no need for any external energy supply, and is compatible with other human activities,” the study authors said. “It is important to note that these injected nanoantennae did not interfere with natural visible light vision.”
