PEI Expands Primary Eye Care Access Through Optometrists

Health PEI has announced that primary eye care services by optometrists, including screening, diagnosis and treatment, are covered without a referral under the province’s health care system effective August 1, 2015.

In 2014-15 there were 543 emergency department visits for eye-related conditions, many of which could have been treated by an optometrist. The expanded coverage includes the costs associated with screening for diabetic retinopathy.

Dr. Jayne Toombs, President of the PEI Association of Optometrists, said, “We are excited to be collaborating with government and other health care professionals to enhance access to eye health services in our province.”

New Look Vision Group Reports Record Results in Q2

New Look reported a 6.1% increase in comparable store sales over the same period last year reaching $46.8 Million for the quarter ending July 27th and net earnings of $4.4 Million up 42.4%. Strong sales results were attributed to growth across all banners and the addition of Greiche & Scaff acquired in October 2014.

Antoine Amiel, President, commented that, “Q2 was another strong and record quarter in revenue and profitability, evidence of the ongoing success of the company’s focus on operations and aggressive growth strategy. We continue to closely monitor developments in the consolidation of the Canadian retail optical industry.”

Transitions Optical Research Reveals That Canadians Are Frequently Bothered by Sunlight in the Car

Few of These Frustrated Drivers Are Aware There’s a Transitions® Lens That Can Help

PINELLAS PARK, Fla., August 5, 2015 – Most Canadians (86 percent) report that they are frequently bothered by sunlight in the car – and half admit that they frequently forget their sunglasses when driving – according to a recent “Light and Glare” survey from Transitions Optical, Inc.[i]

The survey also explored Canadians’ knowledge of the Transitions® family of products and revealed low awareness of the lens option that could help. The vast majority of Canadians (86 percent) said they would be more willing to try a Transitions® lens if it worked in the car. But only 17 percent are familiar with Transitions® XTRActive® lenses, which offer this very benefit.

“This research confirms that eyecare professionals have a big opportunity to help patients find a convenient solution to address a major nuisance that so many Canadians experience while driving, and it’s as simple as educating them that there now is a Transitions lens that activates in the car,” said Isabelle Tremblay-Dawson, senior marketing manager, Canada, Transitions Optical.
