Smith Lowdown Focus Smart Glasses Available for Sale on smithoptics.com

Padua, Italy – SAFILO Group announces the market launch of its Brain Sensing Eyewear Smith Lowdown Focus mpowered by MuseTM. The smart glasses can be purchased online at smithoptics.com in North America as of January 2018.

Smith Lowdown Focus is built on the SAFILOX eyewear platform, and integrates the latest brain-sensing and cognitive training technology with the iconic lifestyle eyewear brand belonging to SAFILO’s portfolio.

This first ever application of brain-sensing technology onto eyewear offers the user focused coaching to enhance cognitive performance. Studies have shown that, with regular use, people have observed improvement in their ability to increase their mental focus for better performance, including in decision making and carrying out tasks, gain a stronger sense of self-awareness, and manage emotions under pressure, thus lowering their stress and anxiety levels.

SAFILO has developed Smith Lowdown Focus in partnership with Interaxon Inc., the world leader in consumer brain sensing technology and makers of Muse, the world’s bestselling EEG system.

IAPB Launches Vision Atlas For World Sight Day

This World Sight Day, the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) and its members are launching the IAPB Vision Atlas that brings all the latest data and ideas on blindness prevention to one place.

The Atlas makes the complex science and data behind these trends accessible through maps, infographics and expert commentary. Building on the latest prevalence data, the IAPB Vision Atlas will exclusively host prevalence data by country, from 1990 to 2015, and will also include projections to 2020.  It will also include success indicators (Cataract Surgical Coverage, number of eye health personnel and more) towards achieving the WHO Global Action Plan.

Armed with the Vision Atlas, governments across the world can be convinced that we need to step up efforts to improve eye care and access to eye care.

The Vision Atlas is available at http://atlas.iapb.org/ with an updated version being released on World Sight Day, October 12th 2017.

Key information from the Vision Atlas:

  • In 2015, nearly 1.35 billion people have significant levels of vision loss.
  • Most of this is preventable or treatable. Between 1990 and 2015, data shows that 90 million fewer people were vision impaired than was expected—so we know how to combat vision loss.
  • Governments and civil society need to do more because, if current efforts continue without more investment and action, 115 million people are estimated to go blind by 2050—a threefold increase from 2015 figures.
  • Three trends—a growing and aging population; a steep increase in Myopia; and a spike in Diabetic Retinopathy—are the main causes for this escalation.

Luxexcel Receives $5 M Investment for VR Eyewear

Luxexcel announced that it has received an equity investment of 4M EUR (4.7M USD) from Innovation Industries, a Netherlands based Venture Capital fund.

The investment enables Luxexcel to accelerate the next-gen development of its 3D printing platform for prescription lenses for use in Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality applications.

Earlier, Luxexcel announced a 8.5M EUR (10M USD) investment for its core activities in the ophthalmic industry (including participation from SET Ventures, Munich Venture Partners, PMV and KLA-Tencor). Infoclip recently reported on their partnership North Carolina-based optical lab IFB Solutions.

This new 4 million Euro investment will be used for “rapid expansion of the Luxexcel platform-functionality through dedicated (co-)development programs and partnerships in the domain of Augmented & Virtual Reality also known as AR/VR. AR/VR applications include smart glasses that provide the user with real time information for professional and personal use, gaming applications including control consoles for drones, sensors and cameras integrated in eyewear.”

Hans Streng, Chief Executive Officer of Luxexcel states: “AR/VR applications have become a hot topic in the industry.  We add the ability to 3D-print ophthalmic-quality prescription lenses to these applications. This enables the AR/VR headset manufacturers to offer fully personalized smart eyewear in an attractive frame design. The ability of our platform to 3D-print ophthalmic lenses in any shape or form and the possibility to embed new functionalities in the lens triggers entirely new dimensions in terms of user-experience and business opportunity.”
