OAO and Essilor Move Forward Together

After announcing exclusionary actions towards Essilor in a letter to members a few weeks ago, the Ontario Association of Optometrists (OAO) in a second letter sent April 29, now indicate both parties are moving forward together.

In the original letter the OAO questioned the compliance of Essilor’s recently acquired company Coastal Contacts with current Ontario dispensing regulations.

“I am pleased that we have been able to put the last few weeks behind us and move forward together. Neither OAO nor Essilor feels negotiation through legal counsel is beneficial to our organizations or in the interests of optometry. Instead, we need to work together to directly address the issue and resolve our differences,” president Jeff Goodhew told Ontario Association of Optometrists members in the April 29 letter.

OAO took a principled position, claimed Goodhew, telling members, “now, it’s time to constructively re-engage. To this end, OAO is prepared to work with Essilor and in the weeks ahead, I hope to report on the positive progress that we make in resolving the issue.”

In a comment to VuePoint, Marc Tersigni, Chief Strategy Officer, Essilor Canada said, “ It’s a time of rapid change for Canadian ECPs and it takes a meaningful dialogue to understand all sides and move things forward.  My role is to help the OAO, or any association, have a better relationship with the family of Essilor companies in Canada, including Coastal.  I am pleased that we can have a constructive and engaged dialogue with Dr. Goodhew and the Association.”

ÖGA, Functional Design for Sunglasses

Design and functionality are the two founding principles of the Öga men’s collection. After 15 years of optical success, ÖGA is now available in sunglasses perfectly in tune with the brand’s DNA, known as functional design.

The exclusive patented ÖGA flex-hinge system is the centerpiece of these frames: in the form of a visible and colored spring blade, the design extends along the inside of the temple with a brightly colored rubber line (green, blue, red, orange, yellow). This flex-hinge with cam return and anti-rocking effect is an integral part of the product’s esthetic. It reveals two colored lines visible from the outside, like the dots over the “Ö” of Öga.

The matt textured finish of the material, inspired by the world of architecture, has a bush hammered effect.

Protein blocking offers new treatment possibilities for AMD

In an article published in the April issue of Nature Medicine, a team of French researchers report that inactivating or blocking the receptors of the protein Slit2 in mice inhibited the growth of faulty retinal blood vessels caused by vasoproliferative diseases such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Slit2 is known for its role in the development of nerve connections and is a culprit in the development of certain cancers.

Wet AMD is typically managed with regular injections of antiangiogenic drugs to inhibit the growth of abnormal blood vessels within the retina. These drugs target a specific factor called the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF).

New therapies targeting the Slit2 protein will offer benefits for patients suffering from AMD, especially for those who do not respond to the current treatments targeting VEGF.

Study finds Glaucoma associated with poor sleep quality

A study conducted by researchers at  the Federal University of São Paulo, Brazil, found that the retinal cell death associated with glaucoma negatively affects more than visual functions; non-image forming functions such as sleep are also affected.

The 45 participants in the study, 32 diagnosed with glaucoma and 13 healthy patients, had pupillary reflexes and pupillary diameter measured. Participants also underwent polysomnography and optical coherence tomography with a Cirrus HD-OCT from Carl Zeiss Meditech.

The patients with glaucoma had significantly more limb movements, woke up more often and had lower sleep efficiency, which is a measure of how much time lying down with the light off is actually spent asleep. Patients with glaucoma on average got less sleep than healthy patients.

“Circadian function has not been well investigated in clinical daily practice, but it can interfere with the quality of life in these patients. Concerns about sleep disturbances in patients with glaucoma should be incorporated into clinical evaluations,” concludes Dr. Carolina Gracitelli, lead author of the study.
