New Technology Driving Consumer Changes, Says US Contact Lens Survey

A recent survey of 1650 US contact lens practitioners published in Optometry & Vision Science has revealed that soft lenses are experiencing strong growth, particularly toric and multifocal lenses.

These findings by Australian researcher Dr. Nathan Efron, drawn from 7700 contact lens fittings from 2002 to 2014, highlight an increased use of new lens materials and an emphasis on promoting patient safety and comfort.

Soft contacts accounted for over 90% of prescribed lenses. Silicon hydrogel was the material of choice for three quarters of contact lenses, with the most popular materials having over 60% water content. Daily disposables are now 30% of all prescriptions.

In addition, 90% of patients used multipurpose solutions instead of separate solutions for cleaning and storing lenses.
