ZEISS Posts Slight Revenue Gain

ZEISS posted a modest 2% revenue gain in the financial year 2013/2014, notwithstanding unfavourable currency effects and competitive pressures.

Sales totalled more than $6 billion CDN, a slight increase from the $5.885 billion in the prior year. Profits before taxes were up 14%, to $505 million CDN.

Sales of Carl Zeiss Vision declined 6%, from $1.181 billion CDN to $1.068 billion CDN.

According to Dr. Michael Kaschke, President and CEO of Carl Zeiss AG, the stagnation of the world economy could slow the Group’s global growth down in 2014/2015. Dr. Kaschke still expects an overall stable development in revenue and profits.

Harley-Davidson and Marcolin Hammer Down Eyewear Partnership

Harley-Davidson and Marcolin have extended their eyewear licensing agreement for another four years.

The agreement is for the design, production and distribution of Harley-Davidson sunglasses and optical frames.

The partnership initially launched with Viva International Group in 1994 has been expanded to include the Marcolin Group. Marcolin acquired Viva International in 2013. http://www.marcolin.com/

How effective are nutritional supplements?

An American study questions the effectiveness of top selling nutritional eye supplements.

Only the AREDS and AREDS2 formulas, composed of antioxidants and zinc, proved effective in slowing down the progression of AMD, and only when the disease was in a moderate-to-advanced stage.

Only four products had doses equivalent to AREDS and AREDS 2, four others had doses that were much too weak, and four added vitamins, minerals and superfluous herbal extracts. In addition, none of them indicated for which types of patients a nutritional supplement could be effective.

Rodenstock Announces New Lens Partnership for Canada

German lens supplier Rodenstock has reorganized their business in Canada as of January 1, 2015. Rodenstock’ s ophthalmic lenses will now be exclusively represented in Canada by Toronto-based independent optical lab, Plastic Plus.

Plastic Plus, the largest remaining independent optical lab in the country, will begin local production of Rodenstock lens designs at the Toronto lab in quarter 2, 2015. “We signed an agreement with Rodenstock Germany, making us the exclusive Canadian distributor of Rodenstock lenses, and from the second quarter of 2015, we also become the exclusive manufacturer of these lenses in the country,” Paul Faibish, President of Plastic Plus confirmed by email.

Plastic Plus is also currently the exclusive distributor of SEIKO free-form lenses and anti-reflection coatings. Owner Paul Faibish indicated that the SEIKO and Rodenstock lens brands will continue to be marketed under the Plastic Plus umbrella.

Anti-inflammatory to protect the eyes

An anti-inflammatory could be used as a weapon against AMD.

A high concentration of oxygen, also called oxidative stress, is suspected of aiding in the development of several diseases, particularly eye diseases such as macular degeneration. Researchers from Florida claim that sulindac, a well-known anti-inflammatory, may protect the eyes against AMD-related oxidation.

In patients diagnosed with AMD, the retinal pigment epithelial cells that feed retinal cells are damaged by oxidative stress. The researchers demonstrated that sulindac protects these cells against such damage. This could be used as an inexpensive and relatively non-toxic therapy for AMD.
