Fear of vision loss

People fear blindness as much as they do cancer, Alzheimer’s disease and HIV/AIDS, according to a poll by Research!America and Alliance for Eye and Vision Research.

The majority of respondents considered vision loss to be the worst that could happen to them, as opposed to the loss of memory, hearing or speech. About 80% of respondents said that research to improve the prevention and treatment of eye disorders was a priority.

The poll, conducted in August 2014, involved 925 Whites, 401 Hispanics, 301 Asian-Americans and 417 African-Americans.

Sales growth and new appointments at Luxottica

Luxottica reported sales of CA$8.2 billion for the first nine months of 2014, a 2.1% increase over the same period last year.

Growth was driven by the North American market, with an increase in wholesale sales of 11% and retail sales of 4.3%. Sales rose 30% in China, Brazil, India, and the Middle East.

In addition, the company confirmed that Massimo Vian will step into the role of acting CEO until the arrival of Adil Mehboob-Khan in January 2015. After that, the latter will hold the position of co-CEO of markets, and Massimo Vian will manage the products and operations sector. Finally, the Board of Directors appointed Stefano Grassi as the new financial officer, replacing Enrico Cavatorta, who recently resigned.

Court reprimands Valeant and Pershing Square

A California court says that Allergan raises serious questions as to whether Valeant and Pershing Square engaged in insider trading.

The judge nonetheless refused to grant Allergan an injunction disallowing Pershing Square, which is Allergan’s largest shareholder, from voting at the special meeting on December 18. This meeting could determine the future of Allergan’s executives, who strongly oppose the takeover bid from Valeant and Pershing Square.

In the meantime, Allergan has admitted to having been approached by another suitor about a potential merger, which would complicate an acquisition by Valeant. Sources familiar with the matter say the other company is Actavis.

Actavis is an American pharmaceutical company. Based in Ireland, it has a U.S. administrative headquarters in the United States.

FLEYE wins Good Design Award 2014

The Danish company FLEYE wins the Good Design Award 2014, the most prestigious award for design in Japan.

It is the design details of the handmade model 4513 Luan that caught the attention of Japanese jury. The design of the patterns, the colour of the titanium, the shape of the nose pads, all elements of the glasses were designed to accommodate their functional role.

Carbon fiber is used in motorcycles, aircraft, yachts, and glasses. It is a light and strong material but cannot easily be adjusted. To overcome this weakness and to ensure a perfect fit, FLEYE designed a thin wire of flexible Japanese beta- titanium that loops across the nose bridge. The wire keeps the pads in place and can be adjusted.
