Registration Opens for International Vision Expo East 2015

Registration is now open for International Vision Expo & Conference East 2015, held at the Javits Center in New York, NY March 19-22 (Education: March 19-22, Exhibition: March 20-22).

The new International Vision Expo tagline has evolved to become, “Visionaries in Education, Fashion and Technology.” Visionaries are people that transform and define the future. For International Vision Expo, these are the manufacturers, doctors, opticians, students, designers and scientists who are innovators, mentors, collaborators and advocates in the eyecare industry.

Visionary designers in The Galleria and The Underground are now elevated to exhibit on level three based on feedback from buyers who shop these fashion-forward collections from around the world. This new show within a show is being built and designed by prestigious third party companies who will deliver an entirely reimagined experience.

Changes are not limited to the Exhibit Floor. International Vision Expo continually delivers a wide range of education programs. Based on the feedback received at International Vision Expo West 2014, a new approach to the course syllabus has been adopted called crowd sourced learning. This new education initiative increases classroom collaboration as students steer the conversation using advanced interactive technologies to suggest speaker topics and hone in on desired information.

Predicting the advance of macular degeneration

Scientists from the University of Stanford have derived a formula for predicting which patients are likely to go blind if not treated.

The new method can also forecast roughly when this would occur. It analyzes data collected by optometrists and ophthalmologists when they perform retinal scans with an imaging technique called optical coherence tomography.

The analysis generates a “risk score” for each patient by focusing, for example, on the area and height of the drusen, the amount of reflectivity at the macular surface and the degree of change in these features over time.

Safilo and Jimmy Choo extend agreement

Safilo and Jimmy Choo have extended their licensing agreement until December 31, 2018.

The agreement involves the design, production, and distribution of the Jimmy Choo eyewear collections of sunglasses and optical frames. Safilo says that, after having experienced an outstanding growth across Europe and North America, the Jimmy Choo collections show great potential for similar growth in Asia Pacific, China, and Latin America.

Signed in 2007, the current agreement will end in 2015. Safilo launched its first Jimmy Choo sunglass collection in January 2008, which was soon followed by an optical frame collection. In 2011, Jimmy Choo was acquired by private equity investor JAB Holdings.

Luxottica and Intel both focused on smart eyewear

Luxottica and Intel Corporation have formed a multi-year alliance to fuse “smart” technology with luxury and sports eyewear.

The first product to come out of the collaboration is expected to launch in 2015. The two companies hope to create frames that integrate a limited number of apps, adding real value for the wearer, without having to compromise on design.

The engineers and developers will work in California, whereas all design will be done in Italy. Part of the projects will be completed in Asia.

The agreement in no way takes away from the partnership that exists between Luxottica and Google for the development of Google Glass, a new version of which will be released in 2015.
