Eye Tracking Results Could Predict Alzheimer’s

People with Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) gradually lose the ability to control attention and develop impairments of a gaze-shift towards a prominent stimulus, as well away from this stimulus.

A noteworthy question is whether eye-movement impairments are detectable in people who are in a preclinical stage of AD and therefore at a greater risk of developing clinical dementia.

AD often progresses from mild cognitive impairment (MCI), which involves a slight decline in memory and reasoning that is not serious enough to interfere with daily activities.

According to some studies, 46% of people who are diagnosed with MCI develop dementia within 3 years.

There are two forms of MCI that show different symptoms, amnesic (aMCI) and nonamnesic (naMCI). The former primarily affects memory, whereas the latter affects other cognitive skills. Having the aMCI form increases the risk of Alzheimer’s significantly more than naMCI.

Researcher Thom Wilcockson, from the school of sports, Exercise, and Health Sciences at Loughborough University in the UK, and his colleagues, carried out the first study of its kind using eye tracking tests to see if they could distinguish participants of the two forms based on their results.

The research involved 42 participants with aMCI, 47 people with naMCI, 68 participants who were diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, and 92 age-matched controls who were cognitively healthy. Participants were given computer-based tasks and asked to avoid looking at a distracting stimulus, such as a dot that appears at random places on the screen.

The results revealed that based on the participants’ eye tracking results, it was possible to distinguish between the participants who had aMCI and those who had naMCI. Furthermore, the eye tracking results of those with aMCI closely resembled the scores of those with Alzheimer’s disease.

The study’s lead author stated that “the results indicate that it is possible to predict which MCI patients are more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease.” If we can detect Alzheimer’s early on, there’s a better chance of early treatment, improvement of a person’s brain health and reduction in symptoms.

“I hope to build on this research and continue the development of eye tracking mythologies for early diagnosis.” Concluded the lead researcher.

Dr. Kuraitis graduated from the University of Waterloo School of Vision Science and Optometry in 1975 with a special interest in vision therapy. Soon after graduation, he opened his own practice, which still stands in its original location on Linwell Road. The clinic has been serving the residents of St. Catharines for over 40 years and specializes in binocular vision, and prism and vision therapy.

Born and raised in St. Catharines, Dr. Kuraitis is an active member of his community participating in many forms including his role with the Grantham Lions Club. Dr. Kuraitis is also a member of Lions Eye Care Niagara, an organization that helps support eye health initiatives in Niagara. Beyond his local community, he is also a member of professional associations such as the College of Optometrists of Ontario, Ontario Association of Optometrists, Canadian Association of Optometrists, College of Optometrists in Vision Development, Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation Association and the College of Syntonic Optometry – of which he is a member and fellow.

“We’re excited to be expanding our presence in the St. Catharines region and welcoming Dr. Kuraitis and his staff to the FYidoctors family,” said Dr. Alan Ulsifer, Chairman and CEO of FYidoctors. “Having run his clinic for over 40 years, Dr. Kuraitis understands the importance of our mission, to provide Canadians access to high quality eye care and eye wear, and we look forward to continuing making strides in attaining it with him and his team onboard.”

UdeM Opens Quebec’s First Virtual Reality Optometry Lab in Partnership with FYidoctors | Visique

FYidoctors | Visique announced the launch of the Visique Simulation Lab in partnership with the Université de Montréal School of Optometry. The virtual reality simulation lab is the second of its kind to be constructed in Canada – the first, also in partnership with FYidoctors, being in Waterloo, Ontario.

Made possible by a $350,000 investment from FYidoctors | Visique, the lab will allow students of the Université de Montréal the unique opportunity to simulate both common and rare eye disease in a virtual reality setting. Through the investment, students will be able to master difficult techniques, see more conditions than they would in their current clinical experience, and instructors will be better able to evaluate their students.

“Our business is built off the idea of providing exceptional care above all else,” said Dr. Frédéric Marchand, Optometrist, Vice President of Visique and Université de Montréal alumnus. “Through this investment, we are taking it one step further and ensuring that future generations have access to the most modern training methods. It is of paramount importance for us to give back to the industry and help improve the educational experience for students, which will, in turn, help improve the quality of eyecare that is given to Canadians in the long run. I am personally thrilled to be able to do this in partnership with the Université de Montréal’s School of Optometry as that’s where I got my training.”

The learning lab’s simulation capabilities will provide students with hundreds of real patient cases, which will ultimately supplement their real-life clinical training.

“Thanks to FYidoctors | Visique, the Montreal School of Optometry will take advantage of the recent advances in educational technology to offer the best learning experience to our students and enrich continuous education of the Quebec optometric community,” said Christian Casanova, Director and Professor, School of Optometry, Université de Montréal. “The new virtual reality training laboratory will provide a rich, interactive, engaging educational context, thus supporting experiential learning-by-doing. By providing access to this new technology, FYidoctors | Visique demonstrates its commitment to education and health care, and to the development of the Montreal School of Optometry.”

The Visique Simulation Lab opened its doors for the Fall 2019 semester at the Université de Montréal.
