Channeling the Elegance of the 1950s

The Marius Morel 1880 collection is inspired by Morel’s very first tortoiseshell pattern frames. They are available as hybrids or in 100% acetate. Their common feature? A three-part, spindle-shaped temple whose hinge provides a glimpse of a discreet “M” when the temples are closed.

The Marius Morel 1880 collection has redesigned the hybrid with a groove featuring an exclusive “M” engraving, and an acetate arch done in deep hues such as black, red, plain blue or brown, or tortoiseshell.

They come in two vintage shapes (sized medium and large, respectively):

– a structured panto shape

– a rectangular shape

With fronts made entirely from acetate and two medium-sized round or panto styles, these frames are sure to appeal to fans of minimalist design. Colour wise, the frames of the Marius Morel 1880 collection are either done in shiny black or in blue, brown, or red jasper.

Angela Harar, Christine Flanagan Honored for Work on Vision Expo

Angela Harar, Senior Director of Shows for The Vision Council, and Christine Flanagan, Vice President of Operations for Reed Exhibitions, are to be honored by two esteemed event industry publications, BizBash and Trade Show Executive (TSE) respectively, for their work that contributes to the ongoing success of the Vision Expo portfolio of shows. Co-owned by Reed Exhibitions and The Vision Council, Vision Expo East and Vision Expo West are global conferences and exhibitions for eyecare and eyewear that draw more than 30,000 eyecare professionals each year.

Harar was named to the BizBash inaugural list of Top 500 People in Events that consists of event professionals from the United States and Canada who lead the largest trade and consumer shows, orchestrate global brand campaigns and plan high-visibility cultural events that garner heavy traffic on social media.

In her role at The Vision Council, Harar is responsible for strategy, marketing and communications for Vision Expo and works closely with the team at Reed Exhibitions. In 2015, Harar served as the youngest chairperson on the Major American Trade Show Organizers Council (MATSO) within the International Association of Exhibitions and Events (IAEE). Harar regularly speaks at industry events, including BizBash’s Elevate, a conference for event and meeting professionals that addresses topics such as using new event technology tools and improving association events and trade shows.

Flanagan was named to Trade Show Executive’s inaugural Women to Watch – a program that identifies and encourages the next generation of leaders in the trade show industry. The six honorees were selected by a panel of TSE editors based on various criteria, including recent professional achievements within the last year, demonstrable leadership qualities and/or having demonstrated a high level of excellence in show management. In her role as the second in command for operations for Reed Exhibitions’ portfolio of shows, Flanagan is responsible for overseeing the logistics of Reed’s operations teams, including the team dedicated to Vision Expo. From 2011–2014, Flanagan served as the Director of Operations where she directly managed pre-show and onsite logistics for several events including Vision Expo. Flanagan will be honored at TSE’s Gold 100 Awards & Summit this week.

Trade Show Executive cited in its announcement of the Women to Watch report that according to a recent survey by the Society of Independent Show Organizers, women make up 64 percent of the workforce among independent show organizers with 9 percent of companies having a female CEO, compared to a 6.7 percent average for the Fortune 500 list. Additionally, women represent 35 percent of senior-level management of those companies surveyed, and 51 percent of mid-level management positions.

TSE’s Gold 100—a list that recognizes events that set the gold standard in trade shows—regularly honors Vision Expo East for its excellence. Several other shows produced by Reed Exhibitions are also regularly included on the TSE Gold 100 list including G2E—Global Gaming Expo, International Security Conference & Exposition West, JCK Las Vegas, National Hardware Show and the Professional Golfers’ Association of America Merchandise Show.

Dry Eye Test Results from Barberini Eyewear

Successfully completed tests were conducted by Fondazione Banca degli Occhi del Veneto Onlus on the use of optical glass ophthalmic lenses with selective action against Infrared Radiation, verifying their protective effectiveness in patients affected by dry eyes.

“Dry eye is a diffuse condition, which may be present alone or associated with other favourable ocular and systemic conditions. This agreement aims to evaluate the effect of the use of optical glass ophthalmic lenses, normal or graduated, with selective action against Infrared Radiation, by patients with moderate dry eyes”, says the Medical Director of Fondazione Banca degli Occhi del Veneto Onlus, Dr. Diego Ponzin.

The keyword of the product that should be analysed in this particular context is “Platinum Glass™”.

Barberini’s technicians explain that glass is the best way to observe the world and guarantees the best constant vision over time, high resistance to scratches and mechanical stress and minimum environmental impact, being 100% recyclable. This particular type of lens, the Platinum Glass™, aims to ensure maximum protection from UV rays, protecting up to 400 nm (UV400), maximum protection from reflected light, with multilayer anti-reflection and polarized lenses and, within particular lenses, protection from Infrared Rays (radiation that tends to warm the eye and its contour) which aims to prevent the premature aging of tissues. This is obviously the most interesting aspect for this experimentation, which showed significant improvements in patient sensations.

The words of Dr. Ponzin after this first experimentation: “In conclusion, the data show that the sun filters used can improve the subjective symptoms of patients with dry eyes and may promote healing of the ocular surface in some subjects treated with tear substitutes.”

SILMO Paris 2018: A Trade Fair that Keeps its Promises

The 52nd edition of the International Optical Fair demonstrated its appeal on this rather dynamic global market with a satisfying turnover. Over four days, more than 37,000* professional visitors (56% of international) were able to admire the creativity of the 965 exhibitors in attendance, including 230 new companies exhibiting for the first time; and to enjoy all the features that help make SILMO Paris, the great professional trade fair, so unique and open to the world.

*Key figures of SILMO Paris 2018.
965 exhibitors including 77% foreign exhibitors
1 548 brands
230 new companies
80 000 sqm. of exhibition area

A global new space, SILMO NEXT took a look at the future with THE SELECTION of Trendy Products, which appears in the digital magazine TRENDS by SILMO. Unveiling the style and design forecast for 2019, the publication is available for consultation at all times on the trade fair website (silmoparis.com).

The concurrent and complementary FUTUROLOGY forum presented the products, services and technologies of tomorrow, drawing connections between well-established brands and start-ups to highlight four themes of the new markets: sports, well-being and health, entertainment, and 3D printing.

Technological companies such as Garmin, McLaren, Matérialise, Everysight, 5th Dimension, LightVision, Microoled, Atol, Cinemizer, and others presented their points of view, combining them with those of optics professionals to inspire future innovations to better rise to tomorrow’s challenges.

The international dimension of SILMO Paris has led the organizers to welcome this year the International Opticians Association, or IOA, which honored for the first time, one personality who has contributed to the development and excellence of the optical profession. This award was given by Fiona Anderson, President of IOA and Elaine Grisdale, Director of Development of IOA, to Robert Grimard – Canadian Optician.

The 9th edition of the SILMO ACADEMY scientific conference brought together more than a hundred opticians who learned about functional visual development with a training course on the theme “Vision and Growth, 0 to 20 years of age”, featuring a programme led by top scientists.

Following this day of discussion, the coordinators of the SILMO ACADEMY awarded a grant of 10,000 euros to Jan SKERSWETAT, from Department of Vision and Hearing Science, Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge. This grant encourages and acknowledges research in the field of vision. It offers an opportunity for researchers to publish their work and gain exposure.

Don’t miss SILMO PARIS 2019: September 27-30, 2019.
