INNOVA/S4OPTIK is excited to announce its support for the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games, which will be held in Toronto and the Greater Golden Horseshoe region this summer.  As a Proud Supporter, INNOVA/S4OPTIK will be providing ophthalmic instrumentation to the medical eye care teams.

The 17th edition of the Pan Am Games will take place from July 10 to 26, and the fifth edition of the Parapan Am Games from August 7 to 15.  These Games are the world’s third largest international multi-sport Games after the Olympic Summer Games and the Asian Games. More than 7,500 athletes from 41 countries will come together around the same passion: sport.

Saäd Rafi, chief executive officer of the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games Organizing Committee (TO2015), said, “It’s truly inspiring to see so many people getting behind the Games and helping our region prepare to welcome the Americas for a summer to remember.”

“INNOVA/S4OPTIK is proud to be part of the Games family. Clinicians will be able to examine the eyes of the athletes with our high quality, precise and reliable equipment.  There was no better way for us to be involved in the Games than by helping to make sure the eyes of the athletes are healthy” said David Spear, managing director of INNOVA/S4OPTIK.

The company has a complete line of ophthalmic instruments which are currently being enjoyed by clinicians in over 28 nations worldwide.  These instruments feature advanced designs to facilitate diagnostic accuracy and an unwavering commitment to quality construction for extended durability over a lifetime of use.

Adlens Announces Electronic Adjustable-Focus Eyewear

Adlens, a manufacturer of variable-focus eyewear, announced that they plan to integrate electronic focusing into their product within the next two years.

Variable-power glasses including features such as electronic auto-focusing, a heads-up display and activity sensors are in the initial design phase.

Adlens currently produces two different types of variable power glasses: mechanical focusing by adjusting the distance between two polycarbonate lenses, and fluid-injection variable focus lenses which uses an elastic, fluid-filled membrane as the lens.

AdlensFocuss, a line of variable-focus “bifocal-killer” progressive glasses that are adjusted by turning knobs located on the inside top corner of the frames, was released in June 2015 in USA.

As reported previously in InfoClip.ca, the Canadian market is likely to see AdlensFocuss in 2016, following rollout in USA and launch in UK.  Adlens range is distributed in Canada by Perfect Optical.

Clinical Trial Demonstrates Safety, Benefits of Bionic Eye

The results of the 3-year clinical trial of the Argus II retinal prosthesis system, a “bionic eye” developed by Second Sight Medical Products to return sight to patients blinded by retinitis pigmentosa, were published this week in the journal of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

The Argus II system transmits images from a camera mounted on the patient’s glasses to a device implanted on the retina, allowing the brain to interpret patterns of light.

The trial involved 30 patients aged 28 to 77 over a three year period, all having little or no perception in both eyes.

89 percent of patients performed better on visual function results with the implant. Eleven patients experienced serious adverse effects soon after the implantation, which were successfully treated.

The Argus II is approved by Health Canada. The first Canadian patient was given the implant in June 2014.

New Discovery About Blink Rates

A study by English and Spanish researchers published in Nature Communications sheds new light on the mechanisms that control the blink rate.

The study found that the TRPM8 receptor, a protein which is activated by cold or chemicals that cause a cooling sensation such as menthol, is also responsible for regulating basal blinking rates in mice. The link between TRPM8 and ocular wetness was first proposed by the same research team in a 2010 paper in Nature Medicine.

In sufferers of dry eye, an increased salt concentration in tears can lead to elevated blinking rates and a decrease in the volume of the tear film, and understanding the receptors controlling blink rates could lead to new treatments combatting dry eye.
