Ontario Patients Experiencing Worsening Eyesight Due to Lack of Access to Care During COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic has had dire consequences for Ontario patients living with eye diseases leading to an inability to access care, according to the latest polling released by IPSOS and commissioned by AbbVie Inc.

The survey of 75 ophthalmologists practicing in Ontario reported that 95% of respondents agree that access to procedures and care has been impacted by COVID-19, leading to 84% of ophthalmologists reporting seeing patients experiencing deteriorating eyesight.

80% of the ophthalmologists report postponed surgeries and 55% report postponed eye injections for retinal conditions such as diabetic macular edema. In addition, 76% of the surveyed ophthalmologists report seeing fewer patients due to COVID-19, 73% are seeing wait times increase by a few weeks or even months, and 83% report seeing a drastic decrease in monitoring of patients’ vision health.

“May is Vision Health Month. With Wave III causing elective surgical procedures to be cancelled again in Ontario, COVID-19 continues to disrupt the landscape of eye care in Ontario. It’s integral for patients living with conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic macular edema (DME) to have access to treatment options that will provide them with the best vision health outcomes and reduce the number of times they have to go in to see their doctor in this difficult time.” said Doug Earle, President and CEO of Fighting Blindness Canada.

Nikon Launches New Top-of-the-Line Coatings and an Innovating Lens Material

Today, Nikon launches two new innovations: SeeCoatTM Next coatings and Pure Blue UV.

SeeCoatTM Next coatings offer lens wearers the best combination of clarity and durability.

Constant cleaning reduces the lifespan of lenses. With a SeeCoatTM Next coating, lens wearers will significantly reduce the cleaning frequency of their lenses.

Due to its Diamond Booster technology and its Best-in-Class-topcoat, SeeCoatTM Next is Nikon’s longest lasting coating, proven and tested against the harshest of environments for a more durable and clear coating.

SeeCoatTM Next Bright: a superior light-sensitive coating that corrects reduced colour reception and improves contrast, especially in low light intensity.

SeeCoatTM Next Blue: with a blue light filter is designed to protect patients’ vision and reduce eyestrain from constant digital device usage.

SeeSun Next: a multi-layer coating with an anti-reflection on the back lens offering patients a full UV protection on their sun lenses.

In the past year, patients’ concern about their exposure to harmful UV and blue light has increased and more lens wearers are inquiring about blue light protective lenses.

Pure Blue UV is a new lens material that allows protection and aesthetics to co-live together. With Nikon’s Light Purification Technology, embedded molecules within the lens intelligently filter UV and part of the blue light before it reaches the patient’s eyes. This lens material absorbs up to 35% of blue light without the need of an additional blue light coating, eliminating any yellow residual colour on the lens, making them the most aesthetically appealing solution in comparison to standard lenses with similar levels of protection.

Pure Blue UV is available in surfaced lenses in 1.50, 1.60 and 1.67 indices and all Nikon lens designs except: NLAS, SOLO and Kids. Stock lenses will become available this Fall.
