Canadian to Receive CNIB Chanchlani Global Vision Research Award

CNIB Alberta announces that Dr. Robert Molday has been selected as the recipient of the CNIB Chanchlani Global Vision Research Award.

The first Canadian to receive this prestigious award, Dr. Molday (pictured, right) is a faculty member at the University of British Columbia where he currently holds positio​ns as Professor of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences and is the founding Director of the Centre for Macular Research.

The CNIB Chanchlani Global Vision Research Award was established in 2011 to support the best research in the field of vision science and rehabilitation, worldwide, with the goal of encouraging world researchers in the area of vision science and vision rehabilitation. The award is given to vision scientists who have made a major original contribution to these fields.

Dr. Molday is being recognized for his contributions to the field of vision and inherited retinal degenerative diseases. His innovative experimental approaches and creative thinking, together with the extensive range of his studies, have led to scientific breakthroughs that have had a major impact on our understanding of photoreceptor cell structure and function, as well as the molecular and cellular basis of inherited retinal degenerative diseases. His studies have served as a basis for the development of new therapeutic approaches for the treatment retinal degenerative disorders, most notably Stargardt’s Syndrome.

Rosemary Kavanagh Awarded the Dayton Forman Award from CNIB

​TORONTO —CNIB awarded the Dr. Dayton M. Forman Memorial Award for 2016 to the late Rosemary Kavanagh for her dedication and tireless efforts over the years to ensure that people who are blind or partially sighted had access to equitable library service.

The award, established by the CNIB Library Board in 1996, recognizes outstanding leadership in the advancement of library and information services for Canadians living with vision loss or print disabilities.

Rosemary constantly imagined new ways to offer services for CNIB library users and, more generally, people with print disabilities. She was a strategic thinker who was passionate about the role of non-profits in societal development and change, particularly as it related to people with vision loss.

Rosemary is remembered for her commitment, passion, and her achievement in helping advance library services for those with print disabilities at home and abroad.

New Look Vision Group Continues to Break New Records

New Look Vision reported revenues of $49M and earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) of $8M for the third quarter ended September 24, 2016.  These figures represent increases of 18.3% and 12.5% respectively over last year.

These increases were due of course to New Look’s multiple acquisitions, namely 20 stores in the last twelve months. The Quebec-based chain store also experienced strong sales growth of 9.1% over last year.

Year-to-date revenues and EBITDA reached $144M and $25.6M respectively, which represent record highs for the company. President Antoine Amiel stated in a news release that, after its recent acquisition of iVision in Ontario and Visions One Hour Optical in British Columbia, New Look continues to monitor additional acquisition opportunities.
