Peeps, a Stylish, Effective Way to Clean Eyeglasses and Sunglasses

Peeps is the new all-in-one cleaner for eyeglasses and sunglasses from Vancouver-based Parkside Optical, creators of the LensPen family of products, which have been used to clean fine optics for more than two decades.

Cleaning eyeglasses with Peeps is a simple two-step process. First, clean the lens with the retractable goat-hair brush to remove any loose dust on the lens surface. Second, slide the arms out from the holder and clean the lens with smooth circular motions of the two cleaning tips.

A new compact POP for opticians and eyewear retailers displays 12 Peeps, along with colour photography and instructions for use, and uses less than 28 square inches of counter space.

Omega-3, Beta-Carotene Shows No Benefits in Slowing Age-Related Eye Disease

A recent study from the National Eye Institute investigated potential changes to the nutritional supplements designed to combat AMD.

The AREDS2 (Age-related Eye Disease Study 2) study, which followed 4000 patients with intermediate AMD on average 72 years old over a period of five years, was one of the largest and longest studies of its kind.

The participants were all given the original AREDS formulation (vitamins C and E, beta-carotene, zinc oxide, cupric oxide) and in addition subgroups were given either omega-3 or lutein/zeaxanthin. A third subgroup was given the original formula without beta-carotene.

Taking omega-3 or lutein did not reduce the risk of advanced AMD, although patients with very low dietary lutein did show some benefits from increased lutein intake. Participants which took lutein without beta-carotene showed improved benefits, suggesting that lutein should be substituted for beta-carotene in the original formulation.

A fourth subgroup was given a reduced intake of zinc (to 25 mg) compared to the original formulation, due to the concerns from nutritionists that the original amount of 80 mg zinc oxide was too high. Investigators found no change in the effectiveness with the low-dose zinc formula.

Eye Wellness Centre Grand Opening in Niagara

Niagara, Ontario – A special event will be held on October 1, 2015, celebrating the opening of Niagara’s first Eye Wellness Centre and will feature Canadian celebrity Chef Anna Olson. Seva Canada Receives 2015 Champalimaud Vision Award

Seva Canada, along with their partners in the Kilimanjaro project, Seva Foundation and the Kilimanjaro Centre for Community Ophthalmology (KCCO), received the Champalimaud Vision Award on September 7th, for their contributions alleviating vision problems in the developing world.

The Kilimanjaro project is dedicated to fighting poverty and blindness in east Africa. “Two-thirds of blind people worldwide are women and Seva Canada’s programs are designed specifically to develop strategies to reduce gender inequity and provide the necessary care to women and girls,” said Penny Lyons, Executive Director of Seva Canada. “Women and children are not able to travel freely and in most cases will stay blind until eye care comes to their doorstep. Simple strategies are often the most effective in overcoming the barriers women and girls face in accessing care.”

Established in 2007 to recognize contributions to vision research, the Champalimaud Vision Award includes a 1 million euro prize and is administered by the Champalimaud Foundation, associated with a Portuguese biomedical research clinic.
