SHOEI® Premium Helmets and Transitions Optical Partner for New Adaptive Face Shield Offering

Best-in-class brands collaborate on photochromic shield that eliminates the need to carry multiple shields.

PINELLAS PARK, Fla.  – Bringing together two world-class brands, Transitions Optical Inc., and SHOEI® Safety Helmet Corporation have partnered to offer an adaptive face shield that seamlessly adjusts tint to match outdoor light and weather conditions – changing from clear to dark and everything in-between. The SHOEI® Transitions® CWR-1 adaptive face shield will fit SHOEI’s #1 selling full-face helmet in North America, the RF-1200.

“Our retail customers as well as our dealer-distribution network have asked us for a top-of-the-line adaptive shield,” said Moichi Tsuzuki, SHOEI® Safety Helmet, president. “We are excited for the added value the Transitions® technology will bring to our customers and for the enhanced visual experience they will now have while riding. Being able to see well in all lighting conditions is optimal for both safety and for a more fun, enjoyable ride.”

“Transitions adaptive technology offers a valuable benefit to riders, so we’re proud to partner with SHOEI® on the new CWR-1 Transitions shield,” said Larissa Bryan, director, sunwear, Transitions Optical. “SHOEI’s helmet quality and rigorous product testing are what make them a premium helmet brand.”
The shields are developed using Transitions’ state-of-the-art photochromic technology, and automatically self-adjust from clear at night and in low light conditions to dark gray in bright sunlight. They eliminate the need for motorcycle riders to carry and switch out multiple shields. The shields also protect against wind and debris, and like all Transitions technology, block 100% of harmful UV rays.

“Motorcycle riders know better than anyone how outdoor light changes throughout the day,” added Bryan. “The SHOEI® Transitions® adaptive shield adjusts to changing light conditions so they can continue riding without interruption and with more comfortable vision.”

Improving Vision through Training

According to psychologists at the University of California, Riverside, just one week of training by repeatedly performing a perceptual-learning task can improve the vision of the elderly to be comparable to young adults.

“Our research indicates that the visual system of the elderly retains a high degree of plasticity and demonstrates that training methods can be used to improve visual function,” says John G. Andersen, who co-authored the study.

Subjects were shown a striped visual stimulus and asked to determine if the image had been rotated clockwise or counter-clockwise. Researchers compared the results of 16 young adults (average age of 22) and 16 older adults (average age of 71) in 750 trials a day over a seven day period. After seven days the older adults showed enough improvement in near-vision acuity to eliminate the difference between the two groups.

It is not yet known if the effects of visual training lead to improvement in real-world tasks, such as driving.

Research Reveals The Most Common Patient Questions About Photochromic Lenses

PINELLAS PARK, Fla., March 27, 2015 – A recent survey[i], sponsored by Transitions Optical, Inc., revealed the four most common questions patients ask their eye care professionals about photochromic lenses. The top two questions suggest that patients need to be educated on the latest photochromic technologies, including Transitions® XTRActive® lenses which offer superior darkness outdoors, even in the brightest sun and hottest temperatures, and a hint of tint indoors for extra protection from light outdoors, indoors and even behind-the-windshield.

Eye care professionals were asked to rank the questions they are most commonly asked when discussing photochromic lenses with their patients. The top responses included:

  1. “Do photochromic lenses work behind the windshield?” (36%)
  2. “How dark do photochromic lenses get?” (25%)
  3. “How quickly do photochromic lenses change?” (20%)
  4. “If I wear photochromic lenses, does that mean I don’t need a separate pair of sunglasses?” (16%).A new “Questions You Should Be Ready For” fact sheet provides eye care professionals background on how to respond, and gives a sample script on how to answer while incorporating the benefits of Transitions® brand lenses into the conversation. For example, the following script is designed to help eye care professionals answer the question “Do photochromic lenses work in the car?”
  • “There are actually a few different types of Transitions lenses. Transitions XTRActive lenses were designed to activate while driving by using both UV and visible light. So, anywhere you go, Transitions XTRActive lenses are always working to protect your eyes from the brightest sun and harsh indoor light.”

“Our consumer campaign is driving patients to ask about the Transitions lenses that are right for them,” said Patience Cook, director, North America marketing, Transitions Optical. “We want to make sure eye care professionals are prepared to answer their patients’ most common questions. The great news is that the technology advances we’ve been able to achieve within the expanded Transitions family of products give eye care professionals a chance to put their patients’ concerns at ease.”

The fact sheet can be viewed and downloaded online at TransitionsCanadaPRO.ca.
