J & J Vision Announces Availability of ACUVUE OASYS with TRANSITIONS LIGHT INTELLIGENT TECHNOLOGY in Canada

Johnson & Johnson Vision announced the availability of ACUVUE OASYS with TRANSITIONS LIGHT INTELLIGENT TECHNOLOGY in Canada. The first-of-its-kind2 photochromic contact lens was named one of TIME‘s ‘Best Inventions of 2018.’ The contact lenses seamlessly adapt to changing light, helping eyes recover from bright light up to five seconds faster, reducing halos and starbursts at night, and delivering more effortless sight with less squinting, from dawn to dusk.

Johnson & Johnson Vision has also collaborated with professional baseball player Bryce Harper to serve as an ACUVUE OASYS with TRANSITIONS ambassador. Bryce is wearing ACUVUE OASYS with TRANSITIONS on the field during the 2019 season and sharing his firsthand experience through a video content series. The first episode chronicles his journey making the switch to ACUVUE OASYS with TRANSITIONS and his first time wearing the new contact lenses as he trains for the upcoming season. “My eyes have to be in tip-top shape to recognize pitches at bat and to react quickly in the field, in all types of lighting conditions,” said Bryce Harper. “Since I’ve been wearing ACUVUE OASYS with TRANSITIONS to get ready for the season, I’m able to squint less and see more.”

National survey data from Johnson & Johnson Vision reveals that Bryce Harper isn’t alone:

The new survey also unveiled:

  • Most Canadians (81 percent) encounter at least one kind of bothersome light each day.
  • More than half (53 percent) of Canadians wish their eyes could keep up and adjust to different light conditions as quickly as their busy life.
  • The majority (63 percent) of Canadians say they can perform better, whether at work or in doing physical activities, when their eyes aren’t stressed, and more than half (56 percent) of people say their eyes feel stressed after experiencing bright and harsh light.
  • Behind the wheel is the most common situation where Canadians are bothered by light, with seven in 10 saying they are bothered by light while driving.
  • To adjust to bothersome light, more than half of Canadians say they help their eyes cope by squinting (69 percent) and shading their eyes (67 percent), and 40 percent worry about how often they find themselves squinting.
  • When bothered by light, Canadians most often say their eyes feel tired (48 percent), that they get a headache (33 percent) and that they feel distracted (33 percent) and frustrated/irritated (32 percent).

“Born out of in-depth research and development around bothersome light, including clinical trials of more than 1,000 patients, ACUVUE OASYS with Transitions is an exciting and entirely new category of contact lenses,” said Thomas Swinnen, President, North America at Johnson & Johnson Vision Care, Inc. “This product will give contact lens wearers a seamless way to manage changing light conditions in their everyday lives and activities, building on our commitment to helping people see better, connect better, and live better.”

ACUVUE OASYS with TRANSITIONS has been developed in collaboration with Johnson & Johnson Vision Care, Inc. and Transitions Optical Limited, combining the respective strengths of each organization.

ACUVUE OASYS with TRANSITIONS are two-week reusable contact lenses. They will be commercially available in Canada beginning April 1. For more information or to find an eye care professional near you, visit www.acuvue.ca. Follow the conversation at #SquintLessSeeMore.

FYidoctors Expands Footprint on Vancouver Island

FYidoctors announces that Eye Design Optometry, located on Vancouver Island, BC has recently joined the FYidoctors family.

“Our philosophy has always been that the best patient care we can provide results from a commitment to continually move our practices forward with the latest technology, education and services available to us,” said Dr. Richard Anderson, one of three on-site optometrists at Eye Design Optometry. “In joining FYidoctors, we are now part of a national group of like-minded optometrists who share in that commitment and have a passion for patient education in eye and vision care.”

Eye Design Optometry is the longest established optometry practice in the region with a proud record of serving the entire Cowichan Valley and surrounding areas for over 35 years. Their dedication to improving the quality of patients’ lives through the health of their eyes is evident through the adoption of cutting-edge instrumentation and on-going education. The Duncan location was one of the first practices in the province to convert to electronic medical records.

Dr. Alan Ulsifer, Chairman & CEO of FYidoctors, commented, “I am very proud to welcome Drs. Anderson, Kirsch, and Reavley and their Duncan and Mill Bay teams to FYidoctors. They have built amazing practices from the ground up and experienced growth rarely seen in this industry. As an added bonus, I have the personal pleasure and pride in having two more classmates joining our ever-growing team of nearly 500 doctors.”

This acquisition translates into two new FYidoctors locations on Vancouver Island – one in the City of Duncan and the other in the town of Mill Bay.

CNIB Commends Government of Canada on Budget 2019 Commitments

The CNIB Foundation commends the Government of Canada for its 2019 budget, which includes significant commitments to accessibility and inclusion for Canadians with sight loss. Among numerous measures supporting people with disabilities, the budget included targeted funding for the production of accessible books, accessible point-of-sale technology, and enhanced CNIB Foundation employment programming.

“This budget will help enable Canadians with sight loss to better participate in our society and economy,” says John M. Rafferty, President and CEO, CNIB. “These funding commitments will allow CNIB to advance our ambition to change what it is to be blind. We applaud the government’s commitment to breaking down barriers and improving access for those we serve.”

The government’s commitment of $25.8 million to support the production of accessible books constitutes a major victory for Canadians with print disabilities such as sight loss. The CNIB Foundation has, for years, advocated for strong federal leadership in supporting the creation and distribution of such material by specialized and mainstream publishers.

The budget also included $1 million in funding for the CNIB Foundation to connect Canadians who are blind or partially sighted with job opportunities in small and medium-sized enterprises – a critical need among a population with only a 28 per cent full-time employment rate.

“Canadians with sight loss are talented and capable, and their unique skills and perspectives can be a real asset to employers,” says Diane Bergeron, Vice President, Engagement and International Affairs, CNIB Foundation. “This investment will help us open new doors to employment for them.”

“A diverse and inclusive workforce can bring new skills and ideas to employers, helping them compete and succeed as they support people in their communities,” says Carla Qualtrough, Minister of Public Services, Procurement and Accessibility. “I am confident that through Budget 2019, more job opportunities for Canadians with sight loss will be created, providing enhanced income security and an overall better quality of life. We’re working to ensure all Canadians have a fair and equal chance at success.”

The 2019 budget also includes $500,000 to improve the accessibility of point-of-sale payment terminals, which today are notoriously inaccessible to people with sight loss. The investment recognizes the urgent need to find a solution that will allow people with sight loss to complete transactions without comprising their financial security and independence.

“On the whole, the 2019 budget will help transform Canadian communities into beacons of accessibility and inclusion, where people can live, work and play without barriers,” says Rafferty. “This budget really raised the bar for how persons with disabilities should be considered by government and in mainstream society. We hope all governments will continue to make such important investments.”
