Ivo Benvegnù New Chief Operations Officer at Blackfin

Agordo – Pramaor, the company specialising in the manufacture of top-of-the-range titanium eyewear under the brand name Blackfin, announces that Ivo Benvegnù has been appointed Chief Operations Officer, reporting directly to CEO Nicola Del Din.

“Our exponential growth of the last few years has made necessary a major reorganisation of our production processes which all take place entirely in-house” – says Nicola Del Din – “We are delighted to welcome Ivo to our team. His long experience and distinguished career in the eyewear industry will be a crucial factor for the growth of our production department, enabling us to cope more effectively and more efficiently with our amazing increase in sales. What’s more, this decision is proof of our resolve to take our corporate culture to the next level, which we at Blackfin call Phase Three. I would like to thank Corrado Rosson, our Head of Design, who from 2014 has performed the dual role of both Product and Production Manager”.

“I’m overjoyed to bring my experience to Pramaor, this young dynamic company” – asserts Ivo Benvegnù – “I’ve taken the time to meet and get to know all the staff members who have impressed me with their passion for their job and respect for the company. The job of organising operations is a vital one and I’m sure that with such a team we will be able to achieve our goals, guaranteeing the company even greater growth.”

“Ivo’s arrival is an enormous help, above all providing a marvellous opportunity for Blackfin to grow and consolidate the results we have delivered thus far. Now I can devote myself full-time to product design and development.” – adds Corrado Rosson.

Backed by his many years of experience in leading multinational eyewear companies, playing a management role in both production and research and development, it will be Ivo Benvegnù’s job to organise the Blackfin Operations Division, making an important contribution to meeting the turnover target, expected to exceed 10 million euro by the end of 2017.

New Eye Test Detects Earliest Signs of Glaucoma

A simple eye test could help to solve the biggest global cause of irreversible blindness, glaucoma.

The Wellcome-funded diagnostic – developed by researchers at University College London (UCL) and the Western Eye Hospital – allows doctors to see individual nerve cell death in the back of the eye.

Early detection means doctors can start treatment before sight loss begins. The test also has potential for early diagnosis of other degenerative neurological conditions, including Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and multiple sclerosis.

The results of the first clinical trials with glaucoma patients were published in the journal BRAIN.

Professor Francesca Cordeiro, at UCL Institute of Opthamology, who led the research, said: “Although detection has been improving, most patients have lost a third of vision by the time they are diagnosed.

“Now, for the first time, we have been able to show individual cell death and detect the earliest signs of glaucoma. While we cannot cure the disease, our test means treatment can start before symptoms begin.”

The new technique means patients could be diagnosed up to ten years earlier than is currently possible.

Bethan Hughes, Wellcome’s Strategic Development Lead for Innovation, said: “This innovation has the potential to transform lives for those who suffer loss of sight through glaucoma, and offers hope of a breakthrough in early diagnosis of other neurodegenerative diseases.”

Safilo Q1 2017 Sales Down Compared to 2016

The Board of Directors of Safilo Group S.p.A. has today reviewed and approved Q1 2017 economic and financial key performance indicators.

In the first quarter of 2017, Safilo’s total net sales equaled Euro 237.3 million, down 21.3% at current exchange rates and 22.8% at constant exchange rates, compared to Euro 301.6 million in the first quarter of 2016.

Economic and financial results were heavily impacted by the start-up of the new SAP information system in the Distribution Centre in Padua, mainly related to its unique fully automatized operations and complex global volumes, impacting in particular warehouse deliveries of the Going Forward Brand Portfolio and thus quarterly sales.

Q1 2017 results also reflected the exit of the Gucci license and its replacement by the Strategic Product Partnership Agreement with Kering for the product development, manufacturing and supply of Gucci eyewear.

AMD Going Undiagnosed by Primary Eye Care Providers

A study from the University of Alabama at Birmingham found that one in four cases of treatable AMD were going undiagnosed by primary eye care providers, raising questions about the need for improved AMD detection strategies.

The researchers looked at a sample of 644 participants with an average age of 69.4 years, all of which were determined by their primary eye care provider to be of normal macular health. The eyes were graded by the Clinical Age-Related Maculopathy Staging system using colour fundus photography.

Three quarters (75.2%) of the eyes were found to be free of AMD, which agreed with their medical record. However, 24.8% of eyes had undiagnosed AMD, with 30% of these cases having drusen consistent with intermediate AMD. These eyes with drusen could have been treatable with nutritional supplements if the AMD had been properly diagnosed.

There was little difference between optometrists and ophthalmologists in percentage of patients with undiagnosed AMD. The patients with undiagnosed AMD tended to be older, male, and with less than high-school level education.

Because many of these undiagnosed cases would have been treatable had they been caught earlier by their primary eye care provider, it is critical that diagnosis happens as early as possible to avoid vision loss.
