Ibiza – Mediterranean Flair

Ibiza, one of Etnia Barcelona’s first collections, laid the foundation of the use of colour, in a neutral tone market. The inspiration? Ibiza’s legendary nightclubs. The new Ibiza Vol. 2 collection is composed of four optical models and two sun models. The models feature a contemporary retro style with chunky temples in yellows, oranges, bright pinks, and electric blues in classic and timeless shapes.

COVID-19: FIA and Essilor Distribute 10,000 Protective Glasses to Hospitals in Need

Essilor, through its social impact fund Vision for Life, joined forces and networks with the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile) to provide critical equipment to frontline health workers in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

As part of the FIA’s #Raceagainstcovid initiative, 10,000 protective glasses were distributed to 38 hospitals and medical centers across 4 continents.

After recently joining the United Nations Road Safety Fund (UNRSF), Essilor is currently campaigning for a safe recovered mobility, as populations are getting back on the road after lockdown.

This builds on the Essilor Group’s other initiatives: through the collective power of its local subsidiaries, it has provided more than one million protective equipment to front line workers in order to support Covid-19 relief efforts (safety goggles, masks, gloves…) as reported by Optik NOW last April.

Etnia Barcelona Provides Opticians with 150,000 Pairs of Glasses

The Etnia Barcelona Foundation has launched its “Opticians With You” program, an international charitable project aimed at helping families negatively impacted by the COVID-19 crisis.

Since 2016, the Etnia Barcelona Foundation has supported nearly 50,000 families and, in particular, children from different social backgrounds, given the direct correlation between vision problems, drop-out rates and social integration difficulties.

This project aims to work to improve their visual health and quality of life. Given the current situation, the Etnia Barcelona Foundation has decided to expand its sphere of action and is taking the Opticians With You project even further.

This project was created to personally help individuals whose economic possibilities have suffered as a result of the pandemic. The Foundation, with the collaboration of opticians around the world, will send 150,000 frames from the brand, completely free of charge, to vulnerable individuals or families who need glasses and do not have access to them as a result of the COVID-19 crisis.

The project, which defends the right of individuals to have correct vision and a better quality of life, will be implemented through the opticians that participate in the Foundation’s Non-Profit Opticians program. These opticians play a fundamental role in identifying individuals or families in their communities that are going through hard times financially.

The Foundation’s usual partners have decided to join in on the initiative because they understand that this charitable endeavor is fundamental when we are faced with a global crisis. Opticians With You will run until December 31st.

OKIA Receives Intertek Green Leaf Mark Certification

OKIA has been awarded the Intertek Green Leaf Mark, a consumer product and systems verification that confirms your environmental claims have been independently verified.

The certification comes as a result of the company’s development of BIO-RPET, a revolutionary material that embraces the 3R eco concept (recycle / reduce / recover) and takes form in RESHAPE™, an upcycling eyewear collection crafted exclusively from five water bottles to produce one pair of eyeglasses.

The RESHAPE™ collection is made of 100% recycled PET material, a petroleum-based product. This material is also 100% BPA free and allows the production of frames with a high impact resistance. The upgraded version of RESHAPE™ can ultimately break down into carbon dioxide, water and biomass after a five-year biodegradation process.

The Exhuberant Dr. Monea

In this independent practice profile, Shan Khan, editor of Optik Magazine and contributor, showcases trailblazer Dr. Diana Monea, OD. Many may recognize her from her exuberant displays and outfits on her clinic’s Instagram, but we could not help but notice her dedication to community and her positive outlook in life.

Dr. Monea has been practicing in Western Canada since 1982, and she is the owner of three clinics – two in Calgary and one in Regina. In her over forty years in eye care, every decision she and her staff make revolves around one question: “How will this benefit the patient?” This question exemplifies her belief in the differences that quality care makes in a person’s life. Dr. Monea’s standard of care does not go unnoticed by her patients.

Dr. Monea’s many years in practice have certainly allowed her time to contemplate the core aspect of her business. But she argues this time of great uncertainty and change is an opportunity for small businesses, including many eye care providers, to develop their clientele, too.
