LOFTxTEF Awards

The first edition of the LOFTxTEF Awards (a collaboration between LOFT Eyewear Shows and TEF Magazine) was held on March 22, at the LOFT Independence Party. After going through 105 submissions, our grand jury nominated 6 brands for each of the 4 categories: Fashion Frame, Fashion Sunglass, Technical Frame and Technical Sunglass.

Online voting was done by opticians from all over the world, on the LEF and TEF Facebook groups. Each vote counted as a single vote that was added to the celebrity judges’ votes.

Here are the winners:

The Fashion Frame TEFFIE went to Blake Kuwahara for his amazing LARABEE design.

The Technical Frame award went to the new aluminium APOLLO design by Theo Eyewear.

Best Technical Sunglass was won by Rolf Spectacles for their new titanium glasses that made the leap from rapid prototyping to crafting a high-end titanium product.

In the category Fashion Sunglass, a second TEFFIE went to Blake Kuwahara for his uber-cool MOORE frame.

Ontario Court of Appeal Rules in Favour of Clearly

The Court of Appeal for Ontario ruled this morning that Clearly can continue selling prescription eyewear online in Ontario. The Court dismissed the Ontario College of Optometrists and the College of Opticians joint application to seek an injunction preventing Clearly from selling prescription eyewear in Ontario. The court stated that when Clearly, which operates in compliance with the laws of its home province, British Columbia, is delivering eyeglasses to an Ontario consumer, the act of delivery is not the “controlled act” of “dispensing” which Ontario law governs.

The College of Opticians of Ontario and the College of Optometrists of Ontario initiated a legal proceeding against Essilor Group of Canada Inc./Clearly seeking an injunction that would prohibit Clearly from dispensing prescription eyeglasses and contact lenses online to the Ontario public. On January 11, 2018, the Superior Court of Justice for Ontario granted the injunction.

Clearly sought an immediate appeal of the decision, which was heard on September 21, 2018.  Arnaud Bussières, chief executive officer of Clearly stated, “Online sales of eyeglasses, contact lenses and sunglasses are one of the fastest growing sectors and the optical industry must respond to these transformations. Online sales give many remote customers or busy families the opportunity to enjoy better vision on their own terms. This by no means reduces the need for eyecare professionals and comprehensive annual eye exams for good visual health.”

Clearly indicated that they want to work with optometrists and opticians in Ontario and across Canada to meet the growing online demand for vision correction, protection, and products while continuing to deliver eye health information and promote the importance of eye examinations. “For example, we are looking at establishing a prescription verification for any eyewear product requiring a prescription that is ordered on Clearly’s website,” said Arnaud Bussières.

The College of Opticians of Ontario and the College of Optometrists of Ontario indicated their disappointment with the outcome of this appeal.  According to their joint statement, “We will take time to conduct a more fulsome review of the decision and provide further information at a later date.”

For now, it seems business as usual.

Prodesign 5168 col. 6011 Ophthalmic

Proving that a finer metal frame design can be as audacious as it’s acetate counterparts. The Prodesign 5168 is perfect for your petite patient looking to make a big impression. It takes a closer look to notice the unique design and the cut-out feature, thus creating negative space with a reverse nylor frame design. The exaggerated cats eye shape in metal is painted black and white with a horizontal divide, which without interruption blends seamlessly into black and white patterned acetate temples. This frame features a depth of visual interest and a sizable style statement without dominating the wearers petite face.

Lafont Paris has introduced, for Spring 2019, a playful pair of classic black sunglasses embellished with white polka dots. The thoughtful placement of the polka dots highlights the glamourous, rounded cats eye shape of the frame. The chic Parisian styling of the “Dancing” sunglasses by Lafont is a timeless eyeglass wardrobe staple that is sure to have the wearer feeling fabulous.

Lamarca “Fusioni 27”: col. 01 Ophthalmic

A manufacturing marvel, the sharp lines of the geometric pattern on this Lamarca frame are enhanced by the contrast of the black and white tones. Like a puzzle, each piece of acetate is bonded together on this “Fusioni” frame. The angular lines of this frame are perfectly offset with the soft swoop of the bridge, giving the frame just the right amount of lift to enhance facial features. A stunning piece of art for the face, ideal for the sophisticated eyeglass wearer looking to wear a masterpiece.

J & J Vision Announces Availability of ACUVUE OASYS with TRANSITIONS LIGHT INTELLIGENT TECHNOLOGY in Canada

Johnson & Johnson Vision announced the availability of ACUVUE OASYS with TRANSITIONS LIGHT INTELLIGENT TECHNOLOGY in Canada. The first-of-its-kind2 photochromic contact lens was named one of TIME‘s ‘Best Inventions of 2018.’ The contact lenses seamlessly adapt to changing light, helping eyes recover from bright light up to five seconds faster, reducing halos and starbursts at night, and delivering more effortless sight with less squinting, from dawn to dusk.

Johnson & Johnson Vision has also collaborated with professional baseball player Bryce Harper to serve as an ACUVUE OASYS with TRANSITIONS ambassador. Bryce is wearing ACUVUE OASYS with TRANSITIONS on the field during the 2019 season and sharing his firsthand experience through a video content series. The first episode chronicles his journey making the switch to ACUVUE OASYS with TRANSITIONS and his first time wearing the new contact lenses as he trains for the upcoming season. Click HERE to view “Bryce Joins Team ACUVUE”.

“My eyes have to be in tip-top shape to recognize pitches at bat and to react quickly in the field, in all types of lighting conditions,” said Bryce Harper. “Since I’ve been wearing ACUVUE OASYS with TRANSITIONS to get ready for the season, I’m able to squint less and see more.”

National survey data from Johnson & Johnson Vision reveals that Bryce Harper isn’t alone:

The new survey also unveiled:

  • Most Canadians (81 percent) encounter at least one kind of bothersome light each day.
  • More than half (53 percent) of Canadians wish their eyes could keep up and adjust to different light conditions as quickly as their busy life.
  • The majority (63 percent) of Canadians say they can perform better, whether at work or in doing physical activities, when their eyes aren’t stressed, and more than half (56 percent) of people say their eyes feel stressed after experiencing bright and harsh light.
  • Behind the wheel is the most common situation where Canadians are bothered by light, with seven in 10 saying they are bothered by light while driving.
  • To adjust to bothersome light, more than half of Canadians say they help their eyes cope by squinting (69 percent) and shading their eyes (67 percent), and 40 percent worry about how often they find themselves squinting.
  • When bothered by light, Canadians most often say their eyes feel tired (48 percent), that they get a headache (33 percent) and that they feel distracted (33 percent) and frustrated/irritated (32 percent).

“Born out of in-depth research and development around bothersome light, including clinical trials of more than 1,000 patients, ACUVUE OASYS with Transitions is an exciting and entirely new category of contact lenses,” said Thomas Swinnen, President, North America at Johnson & Johnson Vision Care, Inc. “This product will give contact lens wearers a seamless way to manage changing light conditions in their everyday lives and activities, building on our commitment to helping people see better, connect better, and live better.”

ACUVUE OASYS with TRANSITIONS has been developed in collaboration with Johnson & Johnson Vision Care, Inc. and Transitions Optical Limited, combining the respective strengths of each organization.

ACUVUE OASYS with TRANSITIONS are two-week reusable contact lenses. They will be commercially available in Canada beginning April 1. For more information or to find an eye care professional near you, visit www.acuvue.ca. Follow the conversation at #SquintLessSeeMore.
