Transitions Optical Launches New Canadian ‘Lens Book’

PINELLAS PARK, Fla.– Making it easier for eye care professionals to share stories of influential and authentic Transitions® lens wearers with patients, Transitions Optical, Inc. has released a new Lens Book and online videos that feature many familiar Canadian faces.

The newly launched Lens Book is Transitions Optical’s take on the classic “lookbook” tool used in many areas of fashion. The Lens Book showcases a collection of photography and quotes from Transitions lens wearers including Alyssa Garrison, blogger, Random Acts of Pastel; Ryan Horne, optician and eyewear stylist; and Laurence Leboeuf, Canadian TV and movie actress. The pages also highlight why these trendsetters have chosen Transitions lenses to help protect their eyes and bring out the best in everything they see.

World Sight Day Challenge Celebrates its 10-year Anniversary

WSDC_2016_Logo_OGSOptometry Giving Sight has launched its 10th Annual fundraising campaign to help raise funds for people who are needlessly blind or vision impaired simply because they can’t access an eye exam and vision care provided by an optometrist.

This year’s World Sight Day Challenge will focus on the need for effective, sustainable eye health initiatives for children and adolescents. The campaign will run from September 1st until October 31st and will help support vision care services being delivered around the world. World Sight Day is Thursday October 13th.

For the past 10 years, thousands of Optometrists, their staff, patients, students and colleagues in industry have all taken the World Sight Day Challenge by raising funds to help eliminate the backlog of uncorrected refractive error, estimated to affect more than 600 million people.

Funds raised will help support Our Children’s Vision – a global campaign to bring better vision, and eye health services to 50 million children by 2020. This will be in addition to our ongoing support for Optometry Development programs which train local people as Optometrists.

To donate, or pledge your participation by selecting one of our Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum Award levels, please visit www.givingsight.org or call 1-800-585-8265 ext 4.

Dry Eye Disease Treatment Xiidra Approved by FDA

Shire announces that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Xiidra (lifitegrast ophthalmic solution) 5%, a twice-daily eye drop solution indicated for the treatment of the signs and symptoms of dry eye disease in adult patients.

Shire expects to launch Xiidra in the United States in the third quarter of 2016.

“The approval of Xiidra marks a new day in treatment options for patients with dry eye disease, with the only prescription eye drop approved in the U.S. specifically to treat both the signs and symptoms of the condition,” said Flemming Ornskov, M.D., MPH, CEO, Shire. “As Shire’s first FDA-approved medicine in ophthalmics, this significant milestone advances our goal of becoming the global leader in this category, where there are unmet patient needs. We have a robust ophthalmics pipeline, and we look forward to leveraging Xiidra as our entrée into the space as we continue to develop additional innovative eye care treatment options.”

The safety and efficacy of Xiidra was studied in 1,181 patients (of which 1,067 patients received lifitegrast 5%) in four placebo-controlled 12-week trials. Each of the four studies assessed the effect of Xiidra on both the signs and symptoms of dry eye disease at baseline, week two, six and 12. Assessment of symptoms was based on change from baseline in patient reported eye dryness score (EDS; 0-100 visual analogue scale).
