FYidoctors Offers Free Eyewear for Fort McMurray Fire Victims

  • FYidoctors will replace the eyewear of Fort McMurray residents who left eyewear behind in order to immediately evacuate the city.
  • Affected residents are encouraged to visit any of the 185 FYidoctors locations across the country to receive assistance.

Calgary, AB – FYidoctors announced that it will assist Fort McMurray fire victims by replacing the eyewear of residents who left eyewear behind in order to immediately evacuate the city. Dr. Alan Ulsifer, Chairman & CEO of FYidoctors, said that any resident who left glasses behind will receive a replacement pair of glasses free of charge, and contact lens patients will receive two trial sets of temporary contact lenses if they left the city without their contacts.

In addition, Dr. Ulsifer said that FYidoctors will provide specialty drops, donated by Candorvision, for any victims whose eyes might have been negatively affected by smoke from the fire.

This offer is valid at all 185 FYidoctors locations across Canada. In order to receive assistance, patients are encouraged to visit fyidoctors.com and find the nearest location to them. Proof of residency or employment in Fort McMurray is required.

“FYidoctors’ thoughts and prayers go out to the people of Fort McMurray,” said Dr. Ulsifer. “This is a significant and heartbreaking tragedy and our doctors and staff want to do as much as we can for the victims. Canadians have rallied behind the people of Fort McMurray, and helping victims regain the gift of better sight is the very least we can do to assist in this cause.”

“We’ve already seen many patients across the country come to our locations having left behind these necessities, and many are very appreciative when our staff tells them their glasses are free of charge,” said Dr. Ulsifer. “FYidoctors puts patients first every day, and we are very proud to lead this initiative.”

Sales increases result primarily from the net addition of 14 stores since the beginning in 2016 whereas same-store sales were  up only  1.2% compared to the same period last year.

In a statement, the president Antoine Amiel indicates that the group will “ continue to aggressively monitor opportunities arising from the ongoing consolidation of the Canadian retail optical industry” .  In Q1 the group closed the acquisition of the 15 opticals in SW Ontario.

New Optical Lab Opens in Lima, Peru

Vision for the Poor is pleased to advise that a new optical lab and service is now up and running at the Divino Nino Jesus (DNJ) Eye Hospital in Lima, Peru. The new optical lab, funded with support from Optometry Giving Sight, is expected to provide 8,000 new eye glasses to poor patients living in Lima and the Amazon rainforest region over the coming year.

“DNJ is a social service eye hospital that provides access to eye and vision care services for the poorest people of Lima,” said Dr. Doug Villella, founder of Vision for the Poor. “Demand for DNJ services has steadily increased and a need for more clinic space and an optical service was needed. In 2014 Vision for the Poor funded the addition of 1800 square feet of clinical space and the grant from Optometry Giving Sight funded the optical service which is located in the new space. The optical lab will also provide new eye glasses to DNJ patients treated at their satellite facility in the Amazon basin town of Loretto.”

Dr. Villella said that Vision for the Poor began working with DNJ in 2013 with the goal to help increase patient capacity from 35,000 patients per year to 60,000. He said this would be achieved by focusing on three pillars to achieve sustainability: high efficiency, high volume and high quality.
