Canadians Honoured at 1st World Congress of Optometry

Canada was well represented at the 1st World Congress of Optometry (WCO), held from August 14 to 16 in Medellín, Colombia.

The inaugural WCO was organized by the World Council of Optometry in partnership with the Colombian Federation of Optometrists and brought together specialists from over 40 countries.

Dr. George Woo, founder of the world-renowned Centre for Sight Enhancement in Waterloo, Ontario, received the Distinguished Service Award for his contributions to the field of low vision rehabilitation.

Canadian optometrist Dr. Allan Jones was the recipient of a WCO International Optometrist Award for his contributions to the development of vision care in the developing world. Dr. Jones has worked with the charity Canadian Vision Care for over 25 years and founded the first optometry school in Malawi as well as SPECS Eyetrain, a vision clinic in Manila, Philippines, constructed out of antique train cars.

World Council of Optometry president, Canadian optometrist Dr. Susan Cooper, in her speech at the awards presentation, said, “Each and every one of these award winners has made a significant and lasting contribution to the promotion and furtherance of their profession, and to supporting the WCO in realising our vision of a world where optometry makes high quality eye health and vision care accessible to all people.”

The next WCO will be held in Hyderabad, India, in 2017.

FYidoctors Brings on a Strong Group in the Windsor Area

Calgary, AB  – FYidoctors, a leading Canadian eye care company, announces that Windsor Vision Centre and Tecumseh Vision Centre have joined their growing team. Under the leadership of Dr. Tim Peters and Dr. Jamie Larocque, this practice has been a highly successful group that has served the Windsor and Tecumseh areas for almost 30 years.

This acquisition will give FYidoctors a heightened presence in this region of Ontario. Equipped with a range of diagnostic technology, a wide selection of designer and exclusive label frames and internal freeform lens designs, these locations will establish a new and prominent FYidoctors presence in Eastern Canada.

“I am proud to welcome Drs. Tim Peters, Abee Azar, Jamie Larocque, Jim Tolmie, Kara Harvey, Betty Ann Tarr, and Paul McLure to FYidoctors. This innovative team has created two of the most beautiful and fastest growing clinics I have seen in many years. Our momentum in Ontario continues to grow and having thought leaders continue to join us, despite their current success, is further confirmation that doctors see a brighter future as part of a stronger team.”  says FYidoctors CEO and President, Dr. Alan Ulsifer.

These new FYidoctors locations will offer detailed pre-testing, comprehensive eye exams, a menu of current lens technology and custom fittings with our electronic measurement devices.

Dr. Tim Peters of the Windsor Vision Centre and Tecumseh Vision Centre added, “We are proud to be a part of the innovative and progressive FYidoctors team and excited to adopt the dynamic culture as our own. From our humble beginnings as a single doctor practice we have grown into a successful multi doctor, 2-location practice serving both Windsor and Tecumseh, Ontario. Integrating the FYidoctors processes, product portfolio, and diagnostic technology will solidify future success while further enhancing patient care and experience. Together, with the already strong local FYidoctors presence, we are sure to achieve our vision of being leaders in the evolution of eye care in the Windsor area.”

MyOptique, Largest Online Optical Retailer in Europe, Acquires New Brands

MyOptique Group, already the largest online eyewear retailer in Europe, has expanded further through acquiring 4care, a rival German online retailer, and Eyewearbrands, a UK-based premium eyewear vendor.

Beginning in 2004 with Glasses Direct, a budget online retailer in the UK selling eyewear directly to consumers, MyOptique has sold to over 3 million customers between all brands and seen its prescription glasses sales grow at roughly 50 percent per year. In 2013 MyOptique received £8 million ($16 million CAD) in funding from venture capital firms to expand in Europe through acquisition, and has set up test sites outside of Europe.

MyOptique CEO Kevin Cornils, told VuePoint, “MyOptique has no plans for Canada in 2015, and will be re-evaluating its market presence in 2016.”
