Federal Regulation of Non-Rx Cosmetic CLs Announced

Federal Minister of Health, Rita Ambrose, announced that non-rx cosmetic contact lenses will require the same medical-device standards for licensing, manufacturing, labeling and instructions as currently required for prescription contact lenses, a class II medical device, with effect July 16, 2016.

Bill C 313, to amend the Food and Drugs Act was sponsored by Patricia Davidson (MP Sarnia Lambton) in 2011 and received royal assent in December 2012.   More than 30 months later, the regulations to bring the law into force are announced.

Health Canada had issued a warning on the dangers of cosmetic contact lenses as early as October 2000.

The announcement noted the enthusiast support of vision health professionals.

400 Participants in Montreal to Discuss Innovation in Visual Impairment

More than 400 educators, practitioners and researchers in orientation and mobility for people with visual impairment met this summer in Montreal for the 2015 International Mobility Conference.

Jointly organized by the Institut Nazareth and Louis-Braille (INLB) and the University of Montreal’s School of Optometry, IMC15 also received active support from the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB), the MIRA Foundation and Accessibilité Média Inc., a non-profit organization that provides accessible media.

The major trend in the presentations this year was the growing accessibility to new technology like GPS, WiFi, radio-frequency identification (RFID) and 3D printing. Since most people already have a smart phone or tablet, it is becoming much easier for those with low vision to access and use applications to help them know where they are and to get around safely. Many of these types of applications were presented at the conference.

Essilor Canada receives World Sight day Challenge Gold Award

Essilor Canada is proud to have been recognized with a World Sight Day Challenge GOLD AWARD for its contribution in 2014!

To celebrate World Sight Day, Essilor employees, throughout Canada, supported by management, organize awareness and fundraising events. Our company feels proud for what we’ve done to help people in the developing world also have access to vision care services. By participating in the World Sight Day Challenge, Essilor Canada and its employees have contributed towards transforming the lives of some of the over 600 million people who are blind or vision impaired simply because they do not have access to an eye examination and a pair of glasses. Our donations help to train local eyecare professionals and establish vision centers, so that Optometry Giving Sight can deliver eye care and low cost glasses in communities where these services do not currently exist.

Join us in helping to make eye care accessible for everyone by getting involved on World Sight Day, October 8, 2015!
