Major changes at Mykita

All of Mykita’s partners, with the exception of co-founder Moritz Krueger, have withdrawn their participation in the company. Bernd Beets has become Krueger’s new partner.

The financial terms of the new partnership have not been released. Krueger will continue to act as CEO and creative director of Mykita. “In Bernd Beetz, we have found the ideal partner, because he understands Mykita and knows that the creative and innovative culture is our greatest capital,” said Krueger.

Beetz is not new to the world of fashion. Until recently, he was CEO of Coty Inc., a global beauty products company. In 11 years, he grew revenue, expanded the company’s presence to 135 markets and added significant brands to its portfolio. He was also president and CEO of the House of Christian Dior at LVMH.

Alternate Pathway for Processing Vision Discovered

Scientists at Monash University (Melbourne, Australia) have discovered an alternate neural pathway for processing vision that could lead to new techniques to restore vision loss following brain injury.

Adult injuries to the visual cortex pathway often result in blindness. However, in children under one year of age, the brain has the ability, known as “plasticity”, to modify these pathways in response to damage and reroute processes through a different part of the brain.

Young children with brain lesions of the type associated with blindness in adults were able to retain their vision by rerouting the visual processes through an area of the brain known as the pulvinar. The pulvinar is part of the thalamus, which functions as the switchboard of the brain, relaying sensory information to different areas.

Novel MRI techniques were used to map these connections as they were reformed following an injury.

It’s not so funny

The College of Optometrists in the U.K. conducted a study on the most outrageous reasons why people decide to book an eye exam.

The study wanted to highlight the importance of seeing an eye care professional quickly when vision deteriorates.

Here are some of the situations described by respondents:

  • A man started chatting to a stranger in a bar, thinking it was his girlfriend…
  • People offending their friends and relatives by failing to recognize them…
  • A pilot landed a jumbo jet safely in thick fog but then taxied it the wrong way along the runway… and many people drove the wrong way down a one way street…
  • A woman took her socks and shoes off at the optometrist’s, thinking she was at the podiatrist’s (the shop next door)…
