FYidoctors Continues Growth in Ontario with Addition of Innisfil Eye Care

FYidoctors has announced the addition of Innisfil Eye Care to the company.

Dr. Morrie Sher received his Doctor of Optometry at the University of Waterloo in 1985. Originally from North York, Dr. Sher had worked in the greater Toronto area since 1988. In 2004, Dr. Sher relocated his practice to Innisfil, ON where it currently operates. Dr. Sher has special interests in contact lenses, laser vision correction co-management and low vision.

“Being a part of a company like FYidoctors gives us the opportunity to join a larger movement towards quality eye care that’s led by optometrists,” said Dr. Sher. “We partnered with FYidoctors because they understand our needs as a clinic, and they have the tools that will help us better serve the client base that we’ve established here.”

Under the FYidoctors banner, the clinic will now enjoy the benefits of FYidoctors’ Internal Freeform technology, that produces high-quality lenses from their ophthalmic laboratory in Delta, B.C., in addition to a variety of support and a wide range of designer frames.

CooperVision Encourages Free Registration for Focus on Eye Health National Summit

CooperVision is encouraging the optometry, ophthalmology, vision science and public health communities to participate in the 9th annual Focus on Eye Health National Summit, presented by Prevent Blindness on Wednesday, July 15.

The summit’s online format and no-cost registration will allow broad attendance, helping advance discussions surrounding some of the most important topics in ocular health, including the rising severity and prevalence of myopia. According to a study published in Clinical Ophthalmology in August 2018, 41.9% of U.S. children ages 5-19 are myopic.

More information and registration details are available at https://eyesummit.vfairs.com/

Within the Summit’s virtual exhibit hall, CooperVision will present its Brilliant Futures Myopia Management Program featuring MiSight® 1 day contact lenses.

“Our commitment to solving many of the world’s toughest vision challenges, including the rising tide of myopia, goes well beyond developing inventive products and programs for eye care professionals,” said Michele Andrews, Senior Director, Professional and Academic Affairs for CooperVision. “We believe that myopia management should become the standard of care. Only by partnering with forward-looking organizations such as Prevent Blindness and IAPB can we achieve this type of long-term change. We’re excited to take part in the Focus on Eye Health National Summit and hope to see the entire industry and our allies in myopia management participate in this year’s digital event.”

The conference keynote will be delivered by Peter Holland, chief executive of the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB), regarding the World Report on Vision published by the World Health Organization.

Vision for Life Announces Financial Support to Help Primary Vision Care Providers During COVID-19

Essilor’s social impact fund, Vision for Life™, announced a €300,000 financial support scheme to help over 1,800 vulnerable primary vision care providers, whose livelihoods are at risk due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

These primary vision care providers are based in five countries – India, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Cambodia and Kenya – and will each receive a cash assistance sum, equivalent to one month’s income.

These primary vision care providers are mainly micro-entrepreneurs trained under Essilor’s Eye Mitra (friend of the eyes in Hindi) program, first launched in India in 2013 and subsequently expanded and adapted to different countries around the world. Today there are over 16,000 primary vision care providers globally, providing sustainable access to vision care for over 320 million people.

The pandemic has seen many countries impose stringent lockdown measures to contain the spread of the virus, impacting a lot of businesses, including the network of primary vision care providers. They have been forced to close or operate under restricted conditions. Even as countries emerge from lockdowns, business has not returned to normal for these vision care providers. A recent survey conducted by Essilor found that a number of them do not have enough savings to sustain prolonged business closures and are the only source of income for their families.

The cash assistance sum is equivalent to one month’s income for each primary vision care provider and will be disbursed to each primary vision care provider with the help of local NGO partners. Essilor has earlier issued personal protective equipment, safety tips as well as advisories on the safe handling and usage of eyeglasses to stem the spread of COVID-19 to its entire network of primary vision care providers. It is also providing online training, enabling them to upskill during this period. In addition, the Essilor teams are investigating relevant support schemes and assistance programs within each country and helping the vision care providers apply for them.

Organizers of Vision Expo Cancel September 2020 Event

The Vision Council and Reed Exhibitions, organizers of Vision Expo, announce the decision to cancel Vision Expo West 2020, scheduled to take place in Las Vegas, Nevada from September 23–26. Over the past several months, Reed Exhibitions’ Vision Expo team and The Vision Council worked together to prepare and plan for the highly anticipated event while closely monitoring the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on members of the optical community. With the health and well-being of everyone in attendance at the Show as the show organizers’ primary concern, Vision Expo, along with the Venetian Resort, developed a multi-layered, in-depth plan to ensure the safety of everyone planning on attending.

Despite these efforts the decision has been made to cancel Vision Expo West 2020 as a result of the Nevada Governor’s announcement on Monday, June 26 that Nevada “will remain in Phase 2 of reopening plans through the end of July due to current trends of the coronavirus infection.”

“While certainly disappointing, the decision to cancel Vision Expo West 2020 is prudent and necessary following the announcement of the extension of Phase 2 in Las Vegas into the end of July. Without having visibility on when the state of Nevada will be ready to roll into future phases or what the future phases will allow for, coupled with the unfortunate spiking of COVID-19 cases in the region, we know it is in the best interest of everyone in the vision community to not move forward with the Show.” said Fran Pennella, Event Vice President, Vision Expo, at Reed Exhibitions.

“We pride ourselves on being the industry’s ultimate gathering place and while we recognize and appreciate how important the Show is to the community, we believe this is ultimately the right decision for our customers,” said Mitch Barkley, Vice President of Trade Shows and Meetings at The Vision Council. “At the same time, we understand the vision community’s desperate need and desire to get back to business. To meet this urgent need, we are rolling out a comprehensive series of virtual offerings to bring the optical community together in between our physical events. Some of these offerings include our Virtual Connections program, which links our exhibitors with attendees; the Virtual EYE2EYE series, a series of virtual panels and interactive conversations inspired by Vision Expo’s EYE2EYE Educational Series; and the soon-to-be launched Virtual Vision Series, all of which can be accessed via visionexpo.com.”

With a focus on delivering greater value to the industry and further developing fresh and innovative virtual offerings, Vision Expo is launching a robust 365-digital platform dedicated to bringing the optical community together and allowing business to continue and flourish. The platform will include CE education, allow for direct appointment setting, virtual product showcases, service and product sourcing, and much more. The announcement on Vision Expo’s new virtual platform, its specific offerings and partners will be shared in the coming months.

Attendees and exhibitors who had registered to participate in Vision Expo West 2020 will receive separate, personalized communications in the coming days from the Vision Expo team.

Frame Designs from PEI by Fellow Earthlings

Jean-François Venne, Optik Magazine’s contributor, spoke with Sydney Seggie about their dream of bringing eyewear manufacturing back to Prince Edward Island, and launching Fellow Earthlings, specialized in sunwear.

Sydney Seggie grew up in the eyewear world. Her father worked at the old Tannereye factory in PEI back in the 1980s. They collaborated with brands like Ralph Lauren and Ray- Ban. Then they moved to the Fukui area in Japan and lived in the thick of the Japanese eyewear industry. As she grew older, Sydney had this dream of making eyewear in Canada and specifically in PEI.

As their name, “Fellow Earthlings” suggests, they are very passionate about sustainability. Their cases are made of organic unbleached cotton and they make sure all production scrap gets recycled into new materials. The frames themselves are handmade from recycled material made in-house, from what would be waste materials. Most of what they make is made to order, so they do a lot of customization. They send catalogues to stores and clients can choose the acetate and the shapes that they want.

Find out how PEI inspires their creations and learn more about Fellow Earthlings HERE!

The full interview with Sydney Seggie, by Optik journalist Jean-Francois Venne is available in the June – July Issue of Optik Magazine.
