Reframe the Game with Virtual Eyestyling

ZOOM virtual eyestyling

Wendy Buchanan had successfully leveraged her opticianry and image consultancy qualifications into a successful mobile dispensing business. She would visit clients at their homes or offices, diagnose their style type and dispense unique independent eyewear frames, often multiple pairs, that were the perfect compliment to their wardrobe styles and facial features. On March 17, 2020 everything changed.

Like all optical dispensers, the provincial “stay-at-home” directives put an abrupt end to Wendy’s business approach. After two-weeks of catching up on those mundane tasks everyone puts aside until a particular motivation strikes, it came to her: Why not set up online ZOOM appointments and pursue her business with virtual eyestyle appointments?

Listen to Wendy Buchanan describe how a covid adaption unveiled the virtual eyestyling opportunity.

COVID put the brakes on at Home consultations.

Optik Magazine Publisher, David Pietrobon,  interviews Wendy to get her back story, discover how virtual eyestyling works and what advice she offers to eye care professionals considering this new innovative approach.

With unbridled entrepreneurial spirit, Wendy plunged into the challenge of online dispensing, adapting her craft to the new reality of COVID social distancing and stay home guidelines.

The Results?
Suffice to say that Virtual Eyestyling will become a mainstay of Wendy’s practice even long after the covid situation resolves. She has discovered, albeit not by accident, a formula for deeper customer connections, more multiple pair sales and economic efficiencies.

6Optix is Ready for the World

Shan Khan, editor of Optik Magazine and contributor, features 6Optix Eyewear which was founded by Sunny Braich in the heart of Toronto.

6Optix offers a large collection of frames named after prominent areas and landmarks in The 6, capturing the vibrant spirit and diversity of Toronto. 6Optix’s story began when founder Sunny Braich, the child of a single mother who struggled to make ends meet, started his first day of high school with tape holding his glasses together.

The prohibitive cost of replacement was more than Sunny’s mother could afford, and Braich was inspired to one day make better vision an economically accessible reality for everyone.

This memory, combined with Braich’s passion for art and design, fueled his drive to create a company that offers trendy, affordable, unique frames that deliver on durability.

Find out more on the vision for 6Optix and how the frames are created in the full article in the June-July issue of Optik Magazine.

New “Frames to Go” Storage System Offers Protection and Portability

Canadian frame and accessories distributor, Suzanne Sendel Agency, has launched a unique new multiple frame storage device named “Original FTG”.

The new storage system provides a less bulky solution to storing and protecting glasses. The solution avoids the bulkiness of frame cases and also makes frames more easily portable – as the FTG acronym suggests: “Frames to Go”.

The medium sized frame pouch stores up to four frames, has a loop to hang on bathroom hooks, and wraps up to a dimension of less than three inches, making it easy to fit into a purse or car glove compartment.

The FTG pouch is comprised of padded and protected nylon and vegan leather and has extra foam padding for protection.

The company also offers custom branding with a 200-piece minimum order at no additional charge.  FTG is sold in packages of 12.

According to FTG inventor, Suzanne Sendel, “The product sells itself and the joy and excitement that it will deliver will inspire many more to visit your dispensary. Anyone who owns more than two sets of specs is going to love our FTG.”

Cristall Opticians’: A Frame Story

In this independent practice profile, Shan Khan, editor of Optik Magazine and contributor, showcases Cristall Opticians, who have been an institution for 40 years. To many, longevity in the optical business conveys a command of knowledge and experience, but to the store’s owners, it is only a part of the story.

To sisters Gina and Alison Dressler, the mission that began with Cristall’s optometrist founder, the late Dr. Gerald Dressler, is far more important. Dr. Dressler’s focus had been their relationships with clients, as well as a desire “to tell a story with every frame”.

Ever since Gina and Alison took over the business in 2016, they have tried to maintain this heritage passed on by Dr. Dressler. Additionally, their understanding of the heart of the store has strengthened them to take on new challenges. An independently owned optical is always pressured to buy mainstream eyewear to generate business. Instead, they choose to carefully curate their collection, looking for unique style and sizes and finding inspiration in international trade shows, make-up, streetwear and YouTube.

Find out more about the Dressler sisters in the June-July issue of Optik.

CooperVision Study Examines Contact Lens Comfort Changes During Frequent Replacement Wear

CooperVision and Ocular Technology Group researchers have published results of a new study focused on comfort changes associated with contact lens aging over the course of frequent replacement wear. The scientific paper “Understanding comfort changes associated with contact lens aging”is available as part of the ARVO (Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology) 2020 virtual conference.

The investigators sought to understand why, due to comfort, some frequent replacement contact lens wearers replace their lenses sooner than the manufacturer recommended replacement period (MRRP), while others are able to use the same contact lenses to the MRRP without loss of performance.

The non-interventional, bilateral, prospective study included 17 frequent replacement soft contact lens wearers who typically report the need to replace their contact lenses more frequently than the MRRP. Participants were instructed to start with a new pair of their habitual contact lenses, then provided subjective ratings of comfort, dryness, irritation and vision every three days until they felt it was time to replace their lenses.

Researchers concluded that despite no change in lens surface appearance or obvious slit lamp signs, some frequent replacement lens wearers experience enough of a decline in comfort that they need to replace their lenses earlier than the MRRP. Study participants typically began experiencing symptoms signaling need for lens replacement—including dryness and a decrease in comfort and vision—approximately one week prior to the MRRP, as the average duration of comfortable lens wear was 21.9±4.1 days.

The paper, presented by Subam Basuthkar, Senior Clinical Scientist, Research and Development, CooperVision, can be accessed from the ARVO Media library catalog within ARVOLearn.com, and the abstract will be published in Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science this month.
