Jean Vuarnet: a Visionary Champion Passes Away

Jean VuarnetIt is with great sadness and regret that the VUARNET team has learned of the passing away of Jean Vuarnet at the age of 83. Jean gave his name to the brand 60 years ago and in his honor we wish to review the historic milestones of this visionary champion.

An outstanding athlete, Vuarnet won the downhill gold medal in the 1960 Winter Olympics at Squaw Valley in California and was a seven-time French ski champion. He was a pioneer in his sport discipline, always looking for ways to improve his performance. He was the first to develop the “egg” position that racers have been using ever since and to incorporate metal components in skies, which have now become the norm.

It was a meeting with a French optician in 1959 that marked the start of the business adventure that lead to the creation of the legendary brand VUARNET. During this meeting, the optician Roger Pouilloux offered the French ski champion the 02 sunglass model as a token of his admiration. These sunglasses, equipped with the luminous Skilynx mineral glass lenses, enabled Jean Vuarnet to further improve his performance. The Skilynx lenses would highlight contrast and enhance depth perception in downhill skiing along the slopes of Squaw Valley, several months later, during the 1960 Winter Olympics. Following this victory the two men, who shared a common passion for performance, forged a friendship and decided to join forces in creating a brand that embodied their vision: constant innovation, high performance and French elegance. The brand VUARNET was born.

A visionary, Jean Vuarnet was also instrumental in the development of the Avoriaz ski resort in 1960 and the “Porte du Soleil” ski area that joined 12 ski resorts between France and Switzerland in 1964. He then became the technical director of the Italian ski team from 1968 to 1972, and vice-president of the French ski federation from 1972 to 1974. A brilliant businessman, he launched VUARNET and always promoted its international reputation as a brand that has become the absolute benchmark in sunglasses thanks to the unsurpassed quality of its glass lenses.

Transitions and OAC Announce 2016 Students of Vision Scholarship Winners

PINELLAS PARK, Fla. — Transitions Optical, Inc. and the Opticians Association of Canada (OAC) are pleased to announce the winners of the 2016 Students of Vision Scholarship program: Melanie Chin, Gabriella Courey and Laura Arrabi. Melanie Chin, a second year optometry student at the University of Waterloo, will be awarded a grand prize scholarship of $2,500; Gabriella Courey, a second year optometry student at the Université de Montréal, will be awarded a scholarship of $1,500; and Laura Arrabi, a first year opticianry student at NAIT, will be awarded a scholarship of $500.

This fall, applicants were asked to develop a project in the form of an essay, presentation or video sharing how they will educate patients and research the best optical lens solutions to protect against harmful blue light and UV. Submissions were reviewed by a panel of judges and evaluated based on their demonstration of creativity, strategic thinking and ethics. While many applicants displayed creativity and forward-thinking, Chin rose above the others with a comprehensive multimedia plan for blue light education. Additionally, Courey proposed in an essay several tactics of exceptional quality and Arrabi shared a notable overview for blue light awareness.

Prism-Containing Glasses Minimize Peripheral Vision Loss

New eyewear containing prisms can expand the visual field for patients with partial blindness, reducing collisions with other pedestrians, according research from the the Schepens Eye Research Institute at Harvard Medical School.

In the paper, recently published in Journal of Vision, the researchers used 42 patients with limited vision from retinitis pigmentosa to test their collision risk model, and found that the risk of collision is highest when objects approach from a 45 degree angle. “This means that any visual-field expanding device will be most effective if it can cover that angle,” explains lead study author Eli Peli, professor of ophthalmology.

Peli’s team is attempting to improve on their designs for visual-field-expanding eyewear, which uses prisms to bend light into still-functioning areas of the eye. These advances would improve vision not only for patients suffering from peripheral vision loss from retinitis pigmentosa, but also patients with hemianopia, Usher syndrome (a rare genetic disorder which results in vision and hearing loss), or advanced glaucoma.
