Oliver Goldsmith Eyewear Company Celebrates 90 Years

Founded in 1926 by P. Oliver Goldsmith, British eyewear maker Oliver Goldsmith is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year.

In the early 1930s, Oliver Goldsmith revolutionized the eyewear industry by developing plastic frames, allowing for the use of colours and textures. Sunglasses later became true fashion accessories.

Grace Kelly, Michael Caine, Audrey Hepburn, Peter Sellers, Nancy Sinatra, Nina Simone, Ursula Andress… These celebrities all wore Oliver Goldsmith glasses, which were also popular in fashion shows like Givenchy, Dior and Vidal Sassoon.

After a difficult period in the 1980s, the label was brilliantly relaunched in the early 2000s by Claire Goldsmith, the founder’s great-granddaughter, who also creates frames under her own name.

David Bowie’s Hypnotic Gaze

A great artist has left us recently when David Bowie passed away from cancer. His music made its mark on the world, but his personality and his eyes were also striking.

David Bowie seemed indeed to have one blue eye and one black. A misleading appearance, caused by a condition called anisocoria, defined by a difference in size between the two pupils. Far from being natural, this condition is the result of a scuffle between teenagers David Bowie and a friend, who coveted the same girl.

A punch reached the eye, a ring scratching the surface and paralyzing the muscles that constrict the iris. The pupil in this eye is dilated and remained so continuously thereafter, causing the famous “black eye.”

That did not stop the thrower of the punch, George Underwood, to remain Bowie’s closest friend and even went on to design the covers of famous Bowie albums Hunky Dory and The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.

COS Announces Addition of Third Sales Force

Beginning January, two reps in Ontario, Deborah Cheron in the East and Matthew Bragg in the West, will take over the inface and ZEN lines. This will be followed by a new rep in Quebec and expected to expand soon to other parts of Canada.

For the past two years, COS has been studying the market. The internet, big box chains, pressure from the big frame and lens vendors have all contributed to destabilize the space of the independent ECP.

COS has created a portfolio of brands, starting from Silhouette to their house brand, Fitson&you, together with a first class finishing lab and real customer service, and in 2016, they will be adding more brands. With three separate sales forces, each will be able to focus on the strengths of the brands that they carry and encourage you to work each brand to the maximum.

Thin acetate temples are sleek and refined, keeping the frame light and streamlined.
