Opto-Réseau was awarded the 2017 Best in Marketing title during a recognition ceremony on Tuesday at the Transitions Academy event in Orlando, Fla.

Transitions Optical honored Opto-Réseau with the 2017 Best in Marketing title, a category of the Transitions Innovation Awards program, during a recognition ceremony on Tuesday, Feb. 13 at Transitions Academy 2018 in Orlando, Fla.

“Opto-Réseau’s marketing strategy in 2017 revolved around changing perceptions of who a Transitions wearer is and increasing interest in Transitions lenses among younger patients,” said Drew Smith, director, North America Channels, Transitions Optical. “From social media and mail-in rebates to creating localized advertising for individual practices, Opto-Réseau successfully engaged a new demographic of Transitions lens wearers. We commend them for following their philosophy of trying new things and working hard to implement new strategies.”

Annick Beauchemin, Director of Marketing, Opto-Réseau and Christine Breton, CEO, Opto-Réseau accepted the award on behalf of the company at Transitions Academy.

“Part of our marketing strategy is to constantly question ourselves so that we’re not repeating the same tactics and strategies over and over again,” said Beauchemin. “We worked hard to reach a younger clientele this year and spent time convincing our employees that Transitions isn’t only for people who are already wearing the product. It’s an amazing feeling to see our hard work pay off, and we are excited that our efforts have encouraged more people to consider and choose the Transitions® brand.”

How Eyes Help With Memory

New research from the University of Toronto is revealing information about the role that your eyes play in recalling memories. The U of T-affiliated Baycrest Health Sciences research team used simultaneous brain scanning and eye tracking technology to learn that when people recall images they’ve previously viewed, their eyes move in the same way as when they first saw the image, helping the brain to reconstruct the memory.

“There’s a theory that when you remember something, it’s like the brain is putting together a puzzle and reconstructing the experience of that moment from separate parts,” says Dr. Bradley Buchsbaum, senior author on the study, scientist at Baycrest’s Rotman Research Institute (RRI) and psychology professor at the University of Toronto.

Individuals aged 20 to 28 were shown 14 images for only a few seconds each. They were then asked to recall as many details of the images as they can remember, while their brain scans and eye movements were analyzed. The participants were then encouraged to envision the original picture inside a blank rectangle.

Using a mathematical algorithm, the researchers learned that the brain and eye activity of the participants when recalling images matched a “condensed” version of how they originally captured the memory.

“This is likely because when we recall a memory, it’s a condensed version of the original experience. For example, if a marriage proposal took two minutes, when we picture this memory in our head, we re-experience it in a much shorter timeframe,” says Dr. Buchsbaum. “The eye movements are like a short-hand code that your brain runs through to trigger the memory.”

The next step in the research, according to Dr. Buchsbaum, is to determine whether the eye movements lead to the brain “reactivating” the memory, or vice versa. They hope that this research could lead to new avenues of diagnosing neurodegenerative illnesses.

As part of its partnership with the University of Montreal’s School of Optometry, Essilor Canada has donated $50,000 to help upgrade the school. The amphitheatre has already been renovated, and work will continue until fall.

“Training future optometrists is essential to continuing to provide Quebecers with the best vision care, and Essilor Canada is proud to support this effort, which will ensure students have a modern learning environment to continue their education, said Barbara Heffez-Piper, President of Essilor Canada.

Dr. Christian Casanova, the director of the University of Montreal’s School of Optometry, stressed that the collaboration with Essilor Canada, which began in 1991, helped to train a new generation who can provide primary vision care.

The University of Montreal’s School of Optometry, which combines theory and practice, continuously improves its training and facilities to meet the demands of the profession. Founded in 1910, it has been established for over a century and welcomes 46 students each year. It is the only French-speaking school in the world offering a PhD in optometry and the only school in Quebec offering a PhD in vision science.

Essilor Canada is proud to support this global leader in education and training in the fields of optometry and vision science in Quebec. This donation reflects how much Essilor Canada values being involved in the community, always with the goal of improving lives by improving sight.
