Optik Magazine Appoints New Editor-in-Chief

Optik Magazine is pleased to announce the appointment of Shan Khan, R.O, as its new Editor-in-Chief.

Khan, a self-confessed “optical nerd,” brings 30 years of optical industry experience to the role. Her varied professional experience as an industry representative, a practice consultant, a business owner, an optician and educator provides a unique and broadly-informed perspective on the issues facing the optical industry.

As a prominent graduate and instructor from the Seneca Opticianry program, Khan was recently honoured as a nominee for the prestigious Ontario Premier’s Awards in the Health Sciences Category.

Khan’s editorial debut will be made in the February-March issue of Optik, where she writes that she looks forward to working with industry leaders in all segments of our exciting industry: “I believe our community can be stronger when we work and imagine ourselves as a team.”

Phoning it Forward with WestGroupe

Thanks to a $5,000 gift from WestGroupe, 10 Quebecois with sight loss now own modern smartphones. Their generous donation to the CNIB Foundation’s Phone It Forward program provided Sébastien Bolduc with a free smartphone and one-on-one user training.

“My goal is to be as independent as I can be in spite of my blindness,” said Sébastien Bolduc after receiving his new phone. 

Even though he has yet to complete all the formal training, Sébastien says his smartphone has already helped him in several ways. 

“I ask it quite a lot of things! I use Siri to wake up in the morning, to tell me the time, to read my emails and to find information online,” says Sébastien. “I also use my new phone to listen to podcasts, which is something I could not do before, and I even managed to check out a YouTube video.” 

In addition to the 10 smartphones, WestGroupe’s donation is enabling CNIB to provide smartphone training to ensure recipients acquire the necessary skills to make the most of their devices. 

Sébastien is continuing to learn how to use the device and hopes to become proficient.

“I still have a lot to learn about the phone’s different features, but it has already changed my life and I could not be more grateful,” says Sébastien.

Safilo Reports Preliminary 2019 Sales Figures

Preliminary 2019 net sales of the Continuing Operations equaled Euro 939.0 million, up 3.1% at current exchange rates compared to Euro 910.7 million in 2018.

The wholesale business increased by 5.2% at current exchange rates. In 2019, the performance at constant currency of the wholesale revenues was positive by 3.2% in Europe, while it remained slightly down, by 0.6%, in North America despite the business recovery achieved in the 4th quarter.

The year marked significant business progress in Asia, up 19.2% at constant exchange rates, while sales in the Rest of the World recorded an improvement of 1.1%.

2019 wholesale performance was driven by the good results achieved by the Group’s own core brands Carrera, Polaroid and Smith, overall growing by 5.7% at constant exchange rates, and by the positive performance of the main licensed brands.

In the 4th quarter of 2019, the quarterly wholesale performance was up 1.8 reflecting on one side the above-mentioned recovery of the North American business, up 4.2%, and the ongoing strength of Asia-Pacific, up 8.9%, on the other a slowdown of 4.0% in Europe. Preliminary total net sales of the Continuing Operations in the quarter equaled Euro 230.4 million, down 2.8% at current exchange rates and 4.3% at constant exchange rates mainly due to the expected decline in Europe of the business related to the supply agreement with Kering, which as was communicated in October 2019, has been renewed until the end of 2023.
